Statements in the House

International Trade May 27th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, right now, Democrats and labour in the U.S. are working hard to achieve a better NAFTA. They are trying to improve labour provisions that will protect jobs, fight big pharma to keep medication affordable and strengthen the language of the deal to protect the environment.

Canadians expect the Liberal government to push for these same changes here at home. This new NAFTA is too important to be rushed, and the U.S. is not even close to ratifying the agreement.

Do the Liberals understand that rushing the ratification of the new NAFTA can have devastating impacts on Canadians?

Taxation May 16th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, thousands of Canadian winery jobs are in danger because the government refuses to act. We are running out of time for a WTO settlement with Australia. The finance minister knows that if he removes the escalator tax, he will save 9,000 direct grape and winery jobs, and another 37,000 tourism jobs linked to the industry. This is simple: remove the escalator tax and the WTO challenge disappears; leave it in place and jobs are threatened. We are running out of time.

Will the Prime Minister reverse the escalator tax to save Canadian wineries, yes or no?

Mr. Chair, does the minister think that the Prime Minister should comment publicly on a case that is likely to proceed to trial before that actually happens?

Mr. Chair, it is quite curious to me that the minister does not seem to be able to utter the word “no”, although that is certainly what Canadians are hearing tonight from him.

Why did the Prime Minister comment publicly that the Norman case was likely to proceed to trial before it actually happened?

Business of Supply May 14th, 2019

Mr. Chair, Vice-Admiral Norman and his lawyer are not confident in that at all, so I will ask again, since I did not receive an answer that time. Will the minister launch an independent investigation into how Vice-Admiral Norman's case was handled, yes or no?

Mr. Chair, will the minister launch an independent investigation into how Vice-Admiral Norman's case has been handled?

Business of Supply May 14th, 2019

Mr. Chair, I will try again. It is unfortunate that I have to repeat the questions and I am unable to get answers.

Do you think that the member for Vancouver Granville is telling the truth, yes or no?
