Statements in the House

Justice December 12th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, the proposed sex offender registry is a puff of wind in a tornado of crime. It exempts all currently convicted sex offenders while future convicts are provided the tools to tie up the courts and frustrate the police. Canadians want a registry where convicted sexual predators are automatically registered.

Will the minister promise Canadians today that registration for convicted sex offenders will be automatic?

Privilege December 11th, 2002

Because you were ordered to.

Privilege December 11th, 2002

Have I got a hotel for you to stay at.

Canada Elections Act December 10th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, is it not interesting how the government is concerned about the rights of violent convicts but nothing about the rights of children? Children are abused in this country. It does not care about them; murderers but not children.

The apathy of Canadians dropping out of the voting process at alarming rates is truly disturbing. The minister talks about giving rights to murderers. What about the rights of people who fought and died for this country? What about our veterans? What about those police officers who are out there?

Canada Elections Act December 10th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, violent convicts are allowed to vote in Canada. Today I have introduced a private member's motion to reverse the effects of the Supreme Court of Canada decision that allows convict voting.

The integrity of democratic participation must be restored to Canadians. Will the government support the motion for a constitutional amendment to reverse this decision and restore the integrity of our democracy?

Child Pornography December 5th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, artistic merit has simply been renamed. Canadians will not be fooled and children will not be protected. The loophole may be smaller but the rats still scuttle through.

Why is there no zero tolerance for child predators?

Child Pornography December 5th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal government has just gone back 10 years in the fight against child pornography. Although the minister has finally recognized the danger of the artistic merit defence, he has now proposed that it be replaced with a law that was already rendered ineffective by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1992. Simply renaming discredited laws does not make the law any more effective.

Why will the minister not set a clear direction on child pornography and protect children?

Age of Consent November 29th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, children must be protected from sexual abuse by adults, regardless of the relationship between them. Now the justice minister says that protection is only needed for so-called trust relationships.

Selective protection is not good enough for Canadian children. When will the minister commit to protect all of our children by raising the age of sexual consent for all adult sexual relationships to at least age 16?

Canada Elections Act November 26th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal government has refused to distance itself from the recent Supreme Court decision on prisoner voting. Now we know, through the court challenges program, it financially supported the right of prisoners to vote.

Why has the government chosen to secretly encourage a perverse policy initiative by the Supreme Court while it refuses to publicly state where it stands on this important issue?

Canada Elections Act November 26th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, the Supreme Court decision to allow imprisoned murderers the right to vote undermines Canadian democracy. Even more disturbing is the active involvement of the Liberal government in funding those groups who asked the court to grant that right to prisoners.

Why did the Liberal government use taxpayers' money to give murderers the vote?
