Mr. Speaker, in fact, we are listening to victims, and victims want dangerous repeat criminals in prison. They want safe streets. They do not want the dangerous criminals on the streets. They want laws that target the criminals.
They do not believe that the long gun registry targets criminals. In fact, it targets law-abiding hunters, farmers and sportspeople right across this country. It is not a law we need in Canada.

Mr. Speaker, the long gun registry is wasteful, inefficient, and criminalizes hard-working farmers and hunters.
Our Conservative government knows that criminals do not want to register their guns. It is interesting that the Bloc says do not put criminals in prison, but register their guns. It is an amazing philosophy of crime.
The choice is clear for all MPs. They can either vote to keep the wasteful and inefficient registry, or vote to scrap it.

Mr. Speaker, I cannot speak on behalf of the NDP or the Liberals. I know what commitments 20 of those members made, and they will have to answer for that to their constituents.
Let me make clear one issue: While we support the licensing of people and the registration of prohibited and restricted weapons, we do not support the wasteful long gun registry. There are many effective ways that we could prevent crime, and I look forward to working with the member in that respect.

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 32(2) I have the honour to table, in both official languages, the final report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Investigation of the Bombing of Air India Flight 182.
The government recognizes the extensive work of Justice John Major in preparing his final report and, as ever, our thoughts are with the families of the victims of this tragic event.
This incident stands as a reminder that Canadians are not immune to acts of terrorism. We can and we must remain vigilant in order to ensure that all Canadians remain safe.

Mr. Speaker, our Conservative government seeks to reform the pardon system in Canada. The opposition parties want to wait.
We are committed to preventing the pardoning of notorious criminals now. We will also ensure that dangerous criminals have to wait 10 years before being able to apply for a pardon.
Enough political games from the opposition. Will they finally do the right thing and support speedy passage of urgently needed, principled legislation at all stages immediately?

Mr. Speaker, unlike the member for Ajax—Pickering, real Canadians understand the consequences of not passing our pardons legislation. That is why we will do what it takes to prevent notorious criminals from being pardoned now.
Enough games from the opposition. Again, we call on the opposition parties to support speedy passage of urgently needed principal legislation at all stages immediately. We are committed to preventing the pardoning of notorious criminals now. Why will the Liberals not support us?

Mr. Speaker, the NDP proposal does not do what it claims it will. The NDP proposal will allow dangerous criminals to apply for a pardon. The NDP proposal will require the National Parole Board to issue a pardon to an individual convicted of a sexual offence even if the victim is a child and the individual has been convicted of multiple offences.
Canadians will not be fooled by that proposal and neither will this government. We call on opposition parties to support the speedy passage of urgently needed principled legislation at all stages immediately.

Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for his strong support of our farmers and of all law-abiding Canadians.
Our government does not believe that a program in which less than 1% of released offenders ever find work in the agricultural sector is effective or helps our farmers. We want to find skills for prisoners that they can actually put to use when they are back out on the street.
We also do not support the wasteful and ineffective long gun registry like the member for Malpeque does. He should apologize and vote against it.

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank the hon. member for her hard work on behalf of victims and for her support for this important piece of legislation.
Our government agrees with Canadians, that the corrections and conditional release system should put public safety first. The rights of criminals should not come ahead of the rights of victims and law-abiding citizens.
I ask the Liberals to put aside their soft on crime ways, support this important piece of legislation, and stand up for victims.

Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for his strong support of our efforts to scrap the wasteful and ineffective long gun registry.
Comments by the former Liberal MP, Hec Clouthier, go to show that not even members from his own party agree with the decision to whip the vote and ignore rural Canadians. It is more evidence that the Liberal leader is not in it for Canadians. Indeed, he is just in it for himself.
The choice is clear: vote to scrap it or vote to continue it.
