Statements in the House

Firearms Registry April 28th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal leader is not fooling anyone with his proposals for unconstitutional amendments to Bill C-391. It is time to end the criminalization of our hunters and outdoor enthusiasts once and for all.

I hope that those Liberals who voted for Bill C-391 will put the call of their constituents above the orders of the Liberal leader.

We trust that the NDP will support the bill in its original form, instead of following the Liberal-led coalition of deceit.

Firearms Registry April 27th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal leader has whipped his members to support the wasteful and ineffective long gun registry by promising to implement unconstitutional amendments to Bill C-391.

I hope those Liberals who voted for Bill C-391 previously will not deceive their constituents by changing their vote merely to satisfy the false promise of the Liberal leader.

As the justice minister in Saskatchewan has said, for rural Canadians the long gun registry is a nuisance.

We hope the NDP will support the bill in the original form instead of following the Liberal-led—

Citizenship and Immigration April 27th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, the Canada Border Services Agency carries out the orders of the tribunals and the courts. To date there have been approximately eight decisions made by either tribunals or courts.

Our government will respect the rule of law.

Citizenship and Immigration April 27th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, I understand the individual's lawyer has filed an application with the Federal Court. I understand that the court has, in fact, granted a stay. The CBSA carries out the orders of the tribunals and the courts. I might indicate that there have already been eight decisions in respect of that particular individual.

International Co-operation April 27th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, I understand that individual's lawyer has filed an application with the federal court and the court has granted a stay.

I would indicate to the member that the CBSA carries out the orders of the tribunals and the courts and respects the rule of law.

International Co-operation April 27th, 2010

Mr. Speaker, I understand that individual's lawyer has filed an application with the federal court and I understand that the court has granted a stay.

The CBSA carries out the orders of the tribunals and the court so that the rule of law is upheld.

Firearms Registry April 23rd, 2010

Mr. Speaker, through this government's Tackling Violent Crime Act, we ensured tougher mandatory jail time for serious gun crimes. We also eliminated the practice of awarding two for one and three for one credit for time served, ensuring that the punishment truly fits the crime. This is something the Liberals tried to block.

We will continue to introduce legislation to protect victims and law-abiding citizens of this country. We will scrap the wasteful long gun registry supported by the opposition coalition of deceit.

Firearms Registry April 23rd, 2010

Mr. Speaker, the Bloc Québécois, together with the Liberals and New Democrats, attempted to hijack the public safety committee by desperately forcing a pro-long gun registry list of witnesses. They would not hear from any other witnesses other than the ones they specifically hand picked.

That is a culture of deceit being practised by all three parties on the other side.

Firearms Registry April 23rd, 2010

Mr. Speaker, we know that the Bloc, the Liberals and New Democrats have conspired to keep out witnesses from being heard by the committee. In fact, they attempted to stack the entire committee with individuals who were in favour of the gun registry. They would not allow the Calgary Chief of Police to give testimony at the committee.

Why are they so afraid of the truth? Why are they so afraid of what a chief of police will say?

Justice April 21st, 2010

Mr. Speaker, I look forward to working with the member on legislation that would ensure that criminals earn parole as opposed to being automatically released on parole in the methods that the Liberals used to employ.
