Government Business No. 39—Proceedings on Bill C-64  Madam Speaker, I like my colleague and I appreciate his fluent bilingualism. I have to say that Conservatives are very consistent. Sixty years ago, they opposed universal health care, and they fought in the House to block universal health care. Today, it is our most cherished national institution.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2023  We have done so much: the Canada child benefit, raising personal income tax rates on the wealthiest, cutting taxes for the middle class, raising the basic personal expenditure amount, signing free trade deals with countries around the world and being at the table, and we will continue to do so. This bill will implement important and fiscally responsible measures from the 2023 fall economic statement that support our government's efforts to build more homes faster, make life more affordable and create more good jobs.

International Trade  Madam Speaker, international trade is very important for Canada, supporting roughly one in six jobs nationwide. While Conservatives in the House voted against modernizing free trade with Ukraine, cheered on damaging and illegal bridge blockades, and supported Brexit, on this side of the House, we know that Canadian businesses, innovators, workers and exporters benefit from a strong, stable, progressive and rules-based international order.

Pharmacare  Mr. Speaker, the Liberals delay, and the Conservatives block. Everything is expensive for people. Thanks to the NDP, diabetes medication will be free, which will help lower costs for millions of Canadians. It is appalling that the Conservative leader wants to take that away from people.

Budget Implementation Act, 2024, No. 1  Mr. Speaker, all the major Quebec trade unions—the Centrale des syndicats démocratiques, the Centrale des syndicats du Québec, the Confédération des syndicats nationaux and the Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec—have said that the pharmacare bill the NDP forced the government to introduce in the House is worthwhile and important.

Pharmacare Act  Madam Speaker, to begin, I will respond to my colleagues from the Bloc Québécois, because they do not seem to have read or listened to the Quebeckers who support this bill. I will start by reading the statements issued by the Centrale des syndicats démocratiques, or CSD, the Confédération des syndicats nationaux, or CSN, the Centrale des syndicats du Québec, or CSQ, and the Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec, or FTQ.

Privilege  Mr. Speaker, this is extremely relevant. We need to bring Mr. Firth before the bar, but we need to do it in a way that is structured, not a free for all. In 1913, we did this at a time when we did not have simultaneous translation in the House of Commons. The French language was not recognized the way it is today.

Public Safety committee  I'm going to push back against the coalition a bit, in the sense that, first off, we have, within the idea of a 72-hour reporting period, harmonization with existing regimes, such as the United States. The reporting mechanism is already in place in the United States and well understood.

Canada—Ukraine Relations  Madam Chair, I do not question the member for Selkirk—Interlake—Eastman on his loyalty to Ukraine. I think that is well documented. Certainly the member for Drummond is absolutely right in this regard. I do not question the loyalty and the support that his former leader, Erin O'Toole, had for Ukraine.

Canada—Ukraine Relations  Madam Chair, Canadians across the length and breadth of Canada have been very supportive, as my colleague from Edmonton Strathcona has said, in supporting Ukraine, but I think there is a profound problem when one party in the House refuses to support the strategic security partnership and refuses to support a trade agreement with Ukraine that we were asked, by President Zelenskyy, to sign.

Canada—Ukraine Relations  Madam Chair, I have seen the response from Canadians from coast to coast to coast. In my riding of New Westminster—Burnaby, the Holy Eucharist Cathedral, which serves the Ukrainian community in both English and Ukrainian, and many other organizations have stepped up to fundraise in the community to provide supports for Ukrainian refugees who come to live there.

Public Safety committee  Thank you. You referenced B.C. To all of you, B.C. has been the exception across the country. We've seen a rise in car thefts, particularly in Ontario. In B.C., the number actually went down in 2022. There are anecdotal violent acts. I don't doubt that. B.C. is on a trade route to the Middle East.

Government Business No. 35—Extension of Sitting Hours and Conduct of Extended Proceedings  Madam Speaker, that is fair enough. We know what the agenda of the member for Carleton is: Axe services, build up billionaires, fix elections and stop democracy. We hear this every day. That is what the Conservatives stand for. We saw this when the Harper regime was in power; there was $30 billion for billionaires each and every year, according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer, as a result of the Harper tax-free treaties for billionaires with tax havens.

Public Safety committee  Thank you very much, Mr. Chair. I’d like to thank the witnesses for being here today. Mr. Champagne, drawing on your experience, having worked with our economic partners around the world, including the U.S. and Europe, can you walk the Committee through the importance of passing C‑26 to protect not just our own businesses, but the businesses we work with every day under free trade?

Foreign Affairs committee  You'll see that there is a recommendation there that the legal services provided in the department be retained. There have, over the years, been various ideas floated to have the Department of Justice handle these particular issues more directly—for example, extradition and issues like that.
