Industry committee  Thank you. Maybe just at the very highest level I'll say that we really see our role in helping our industry contribute to the quality of life of communities right across this country, while we're enriching the lives of our visitors [Technical difficulty—Editor] people and places of our land.

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  Thank you. I'm happy to answer that. Yes, our current funding is in the order of $96 million, and $100 million was proposed in the April budget as additional funding for Destination Canada. It's over a three-year period. It's somewhat front-end loaded. Although those discussions with Treasury Board are still under way to define exactly how those funds would be spent and in what years, I think the intent of the budget originally was to front-end load those significantly in year one and two.

Industry committee  We certainly have an ongoing conversation with our ministry on the conditions and state of the industry, on what our industry is asking for, and some of the advocacy bodies like the Tourism Industry Association of Canada are very vocal on these issues and have ongoing conversations with ISED.

June 22nd, 2021Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  Thank you, Monique. As part of our new strategy to work on destination development and the product and supply side of the tourism industry, we have relationships with the regional development agencies right across the country. Those are still just forming up, I would say, as we develop the strategies for developing clusters and corridors across the country that can compete on a global level.

June 22nd, 2021Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  Thank you. I'm happy to do so. We have a long-standing relationship with Parks Canada because they are such an important asset for Canada's tourism industry. By way of example, for instance, this afternoon we are holding a national webinar. We are hosting Parks Canada to help share what they are doing with our industry.

June 22nd, 2021Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  Certainly, I'd be happy to answer that. Our commitment to the domestic market this year will be about $35 million. What we are doing is supplementing the activity of the provinces, which are focusing primarily on intraprovincial travel. Destination Canada's role is to promote interprovincial travel, to get Canadians travelling between our provinces again.

June 22nd, 2021Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  Thank you so much for the question. The tourism ecosystem is a very complex one of different partnerships across our nation and, really, across the world. When I was with Destination British Columbia, which was one of the provincial partners in Team Canada, we very much worked with Destination Canada and our provincial and territorial counterparts to ensure that where we had overlaps, they were productive overlaps.

October 29th, 2020Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  I think the most critical thing is that we restore confidence in travel. People need to feel safe in order to continue to travel, to get on airplanes, to stay in hotels. That would be our primary concern.

October 29th, 2020Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  Certainly, as Canadians, we all have the opportunity to demonstrate by our own behaviours that travel can be done safely. In each part of the country, the health advisories are a little bit different, so we take the opportunities where we can. We very much have an opportunity domestically to rekindle and restart our tourism economy.

October 29th, 2020Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  We're in constant discussion with our ministry about the needs of our industry. Currently, we're in the throes of developing our corporate plans and budget needs for the future. Since those are still within government for consideration, there's not much that I'm able to share at this time.

October 29th, 2020Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  This has certainly been a topic of great interest as we've seen communities reopen and welcome visitors. Certainly, the concerns of indigenous communities across our nation have been ones that everyone is trying to be extremely sensitive to, and those concerns extend as well to all communities, I would say.

October 29th, 2020Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  Thank you for your question. Certainly, there have been a wide variety of programs that have been very beneficial to the tourism industry, with everything from the emergency wage subsidy, which has really allowed many businesses across the country to remain open and strive to be profitable, to what we've seen with the Canada emergency business account, of course, which has been a very helpful credit availability program, and also the commercial rent assistance.

October 29th, 2020Committee meeting

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  You're quite correct, in that liquidity remains the number one challenge that tourism businesses are facing in the coming months. A lack of cash flow and the need to cover fixed costs is really the driving force behind the current challenges. I know that industry associations such as the Hotel Association of Canada and the Tourism Industry Association of Canada have made their views known on how government can best support liquidity for the industry, and I know that a number of those supports are being made available through the Business Development Bank of Canada and other sources.

Marsha Walden

Industry committee  Sorry. I did not receive any interpretation for that question. I'm very sorry.

Industry committee  I am currently on what's called “Off”, which I believe to be the floor.
