Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, I thank the constituents of Peterborough—Kawartha. It is always a big honour to stand in the House of Commons to speak on their behalf. Without a doubt, the biggest issue facing Canadians right now is housing. If anybody would argue that with me in the House, I would definitely die on that hill.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, over and over, the Liberal-NDP government promised interest rates would not go up, but after eight miserable years of the Prime Minister, Canadians know that is not true. Mortgage defaults and forced home sales are on the rise. Lindsay is one of hundreds who wrote to me to tell me about her skyrocketing mortgage rate.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, Canadians and Conservatives all know that after eight years of the Prime Minister, he is just not worth the cost, but the Liberals and the NDP are still not receiving this message. For those who do not believe me, take a look at the headlines: “Average rent went up another 11% in past year—and even getting a roommate doesn't help much”.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, after eight years of the Prime Minister, Canadians cannot afford a house. That is the reality, and we will continue to vote against inflationary spending that is driving up household debt. Canadians are paying more on the interest on their debt. They cannot afford a home.

Eric Roter  Mr. Speaker, Eric Roter, 32, of Apsley passed on September 25, after a courageous battle with bipolar disorder. We are devastated by this loss, and completely unprepared. Eric has impacted the lives of so many people and to know Eric was to love him. We struggled greatly with Eric and his battle with mental health.

National Strategy for Eye Care Act  Madam Speaker, I thank my hon. colleague for putting forth this private member's bill. It is always an honour to get up in the House and address Canadians as an elected representative from my riding of Peterborough—Kawartha, but our voices often resonate across Canada. What we are talking about tonight, for those watching, and I know my mom and dad are watching, is a private member's bill.

National Strategy for Eye Care Act  Madam Speaker, I would ask what this looks like for the member in terms of the provincial jurisdiction. We are trying to navigate this waterway when we are looking at a national eye care strategy, but we still have provincial and territorial jurisdictions. How does she see that panning out?

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, everything I said in that debate is true, because 50% of the people eligible for the Liberals' child care that is going to save the world cannot even access it. That is what we are reading into the record. For her record, we absolutely voted in favour of it. However, the reality is that it is not working.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, it sounded as though the member was asking the Speaker that question.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, there was facetiousness in the House of Commons? I am shocked. I would like to know how many constituents have called the hon. member from the Bloc and said that they support a radical increase in tax on their fuel. How many constituents are happy that fuel is going through the roof and increasing the cost of their home, living, groceries and food?

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, I respect all my colleagues in the House, but that is laughable. The Liberals and the NDP, who signed a coalition, said to lock one's interest rates in; they were never going to go up, and everything was going to be great. People are losing their homes. To say that we are not doing anything for affordability is bonkers.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, this is the reality across the country. Because parents are not okay and are so busy worrying about paying for food, heat, hydro and groceries, their kids are less engaged. They do not get the attention they need. They feel disconnected. We know this. We can look at the Children First study that came out in August.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, I am sharing my time this afternoon with the member for Lakeland. It is always an honour to rise in the House of Commons to speak on behalf of my constituents of Peterborough—Kawartha and of all Canadians. I am the shadow minister for families, children and social development, and I have been pretty vocal in my cry of the mental health crisis across this country, in particular for our kids.

Petitions  Mr. Speaker, it is an honour to rise in the House of Commons today to present this petition on behalf of graduate and post-doctoral science students to support science. It is signed by hundreds of students. Graduate students and post-doctoral scholars are Canada's workforce in research and innovation.

Finance  Mr. Speaker, just two months ago the finance minister said, “Canada's plan to bring down inflation is working.” Clearly, the Liberals are experiencing inflation differently, because it is not going down; it is up again today. After eight years of the current Prime Minister, mortgage payments are up 151%, and Canadians are suffering.
