Agriculture committee  How much time is left? I guess I'm done. Thank you very much.

Agriculture committee  Can we turn that social media around, in terms of some initiatives, so that we actually use that as our platform to promote what we're doing right to come out against these activists who are out there? They cause incredible stress on us as farmers—not just livestock producers—around the production of our crops because of what we use to grow these crops that are the healthiest.

Agriculture committee  Okay. I'm looking for some direction. I think that's a real opportunity that we may be missing. Earlier, Mr. Skinner mentioned that the key is to leverage the strength of the community. There have been individuals, and I would like to comment that, actually, you have gone through and trained professionals of all types to come in and assist in training farmers.

Agriculture committee  A comment was made earlier.... I farmed all my life, also. I went through some of the issues and the concerns back in the 1980s. I can tell you with certainty that it isn't the work that causes the stress. When you change the circumstances around the work, it's a great day. You go forward.

Agriculture committee  Is there something federally that we can help with, in that coordination, whether it's through Agriculture Canada or through Health Canada? And if there is—that may not be a fair question to ask you right now, but if there's something that any of you can forward to us in terms of your thoughts on bringing that together, I would very much appreciate it.

Agriculture committee  Andrew, where does your social media come in on that?

Agriculture committee  Can we as a federal government help on the prevention side? With that being on social media, can we actually promote agriculture and the healthy lifestyle? I'm not sure we're actually doing enough of that.

Agriculture committee  If you can help us with that, it would be great.

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Thank you to the witnesses. I just want to say thank you to Andrew Campbell for stepping out—he's a neighbour. With regard to that #farm365, I can only imagine the stress that comes when it's not just you but your family receiving those comments, many of them from animal rights organizations or those who think we're poisoning the world by growing good crops.

Agriculture committee  Are there any other comments? We understand the professional, academic side. What about the use of young people who come up through 4-H, the advanced leadership program, Canadian Young Farmers' Forum and junior farmers? Have there been contacts and working relationships in coordinating come-alongside projects with these organizations?

Agriculture committee  Mehgin, in your opening statement, you talked about being at a gathering of some 400 people, and there was a high percentage—some 90%—who you said had known someone who had come to suicide. That's a large gathering of people. I don't know what session it was, but will something come out of that to help us in terms of advice or direction from that number of people?

Agriculture committee  I mean both.

Agriculture committee  You talked about training for intervenors. How does that happen? Who does the training? Who should be doing the training? What would be the qualifiers to have an intervenor trained?

October 2nd, 2018Committee meeting

Bev Shipley

Agriculture committee  I'm talking about an intervenor like Nancy.

Agriculture committee  Professional psychologists have their role, but two other components are really critical. One is because Nancy and those like her come alongside somebody and give them hope. That's one of the key ingredients, I believe. As for the second part, is there someone who comes along and puts together some financial support by collecting the information of creditors, and then an understanding person sits with these individuals to help?
