Agriculture committee  That's great. I'd like to come back to you, Ms. Labchuk. There's been some controversy about whether biosecurity risks or diseases have actually been introduced into farms by trespassers. One in particular was the case of the hog farm. Could you comment on that? My understanding was that actually the judge said it did not happen, but there has been some confusion.

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Chair, and thank you to all the witnesses for being here today. This is a very important bill. Of course, on the agriculture committee, we're all concerned about the health and welfare of farmers, as well as the welfare of the animals on those farms. There's one thing I'd like to ask about.

Agriculture committee  Thank you. I'd like to turn to Dr. Ireland. I'm curious. There are voluntary standards on farms and there are standards through associations. Does the CFIA have regular inspections for these, or are you only inspecting when you're called in because there's a breach of some sort?

Agriculture committee  I want to interrupt for a second because I have only a couple of minutes. I was asking what it is that these groups.... You worked with Humane Canada, I believe, and that's a group that advocates for animal welfare and is not opposed to animal agriculture. I think there are numerous others that I could actually put into the record, but I'm sure you know of them.

I think everyone on this committee agrees that biosecurity on farms is a real concern and that the mental health and welfare of our farmers is of concern as well. I don't think there's any disagreement on that.

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair, and thank you to all the witnesses for being here this evening. I'll be sharing my time with Ms. Valdez, who's joining us virtually. I'd like to start with my questions with Mr. Lawson. One question I'm curious about is the increasing occurrence of zoonotic diseases and any correlation that you see with extreme climate events.

Agriculture committee  That's great. Thank you. I have one more quick question before I turn it over to Ms. Valdez. You talked about the antimicrobial use guidelines. I'm wondering how the increased use of antibiotics in agriculture, especially in livestock, has affected the ability to actually fight some of the diseases you're seeing.

Agriculture committee  Mr. Winter mentioned his concern about the interaction of different chemicals that might occur in a hive from bees bringing in different chemicals, obviously. Have you looked at that issue and examined what has happened, not only cumulatively but interactively, with these different chemicals?
