Micheline Lemieux  Mr. Speaker, 2021 has been a tough year for my community so far. We have lost several tremendous citizens. Today, I want to express my great sorrow at the loss of Micheline Lemieux, who died in her sleep on March 21 at the age of 70. Everyone knew her. She was always travelling around Old Aylmer on her bike.

Diversity and Inclusion  Madam Speaker, I rise today to speak to Motion No. 36, which seeks to designate August 1 of each year as emancipation day in Canada. Motion No. 36 reminds us of August 1, 1834, the symbolic day when slavery was abolished in the British Empire. However, that critical date in Canadian history also reminds us that slavery did in fact exist in Canada for over 200 years.

Charlotte L'Écuyer  Mr. Speaker, the Aylmer sector of Gatineau has lost two great women in 2021. A few weeks ago, I rose in the House to recognize former mayor Constance Provost. Today, I rise to pay tribute to Charlotte L'Écuyer, who represented Pontiac in the Quebec National Assembly from 2003 to 2014.

For nearly 187 years, Black people have been free from slavery on this same land. For 66 years, Black immigrants have not been discouraged from settling in Canada.

Constance Provost  Mr. Speaker, I want to pay tribute to Constance Provost, a great lady from my region. She passed away on January 9 at the age of 96, surrounded by her four children. Ms. Provost was a woman of vision and character. In 1983, she was the first woman to be elected mayor of the City of Gatineau.

Petitions  Mr. Speaker, the second petition that I would like to present on behalf of the Nigerian Canadian community, which calls upon Parliament to condemn the violence against unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate in October in Nigeria. This is an issue that has been of great concern to the Nigerian diaspora in Canada.

Petitions  Mr. Speaker, the last petition I would like to present is also signed by many Canadians. They are calling on not just the government but also the House of Commons to do everything possible to combat climate change. More specifically, they are calling on us to put a price on pollution and to impose border tax adjustments for goods that cross our border.
