Income Tax Amendments Act, 1999  Mr. Speaker, it is a pleasure to speak to Bill C-25 and comment on the exchange that took place between my colleague from Medicine Hat and the parliamentary secretary regarding the $58 billion which the Liberal government is talking about as being tax cuts. As my colleague from Medicine Hat indicated, there really are no tax cuts.

Budget Implementation Act, 2000  Mr. Speaker, the hon. member is right in saying that this is the best country in the world, but if the Liberals continue to govern for very long, it will not be the best country in the world. It is quite interesting that he would ask why we are not saying good things about the budget.

Budget Implementation Act, 2000  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for stating that absolutely correctly. Solution 17 addresses that point. Let me just read what solution 17 is going to do for families. Solution 17 will create a marginal rate of 17%. It will increase the basic personal and spousal credit to $10,000.

Budget Implementation Act, 2000  Mr. Speaker, what my hon. colleague has said is just one example of the waste of money that has been going on. The government has the wrong priorities. We need officers on the street. The auditor general has talked about tools not being available to the RCMP. We are now taking the RCMP away from the job of keeping our streets safe and putting them into looking at a registry.

Budget Implementation Act, 2000  Mr. Speaker, it is a pleasure to speak on behalf of the Calgary East constituency. This is my second speech on the budget. I have chosen to speak on this topic again because I would like to tell the House what my constituents and other Canadians have been saying. My remarks are based on two concepts.

Canada Development Corporation  Mr. Speaker, hon. members have been talking about obeying the law, so why do they not obey the law? The Ethics Counsellor stated quite clearly that the documents had to be released under the Access to Information Act. We know that the finance department had the documents on the day they wrote to the Leader of the Opposition stating that they did not.

Export Development Corporation  Mr. Speaker, since the financing of the EDC is not available to the public we cannot clarify that fact, but the beneficiaries of many of these EDC loans are donors to the Liberal Party. Canadians are horrified to learn that EDC is financing some of the most damaging environmental projects in the world.

Export Development Corporation  Mr. Speaker, the EDC continues to shovel billions of taxpayer money out the door to fund ecologically disastrous projects like the Three Gorges dam in China and the Urra hydro project in Columbia. I ask the minister in what way does financing ecologically disastrous projects overseas benefit the Canadian taxpayer?

Statistics Act  moved for leave to introduce Bill C-468, an act to amend the Statistics Act (ethnicity question). Mr. Speaker, it is a pleasure for me to rise on behalf of the constituents of Calgary East to introduce my private member's bill in the House today. The purpose of the bill is to ensure that no question will be asked about a person's ethnicity in the population census.

Modernization Of Benefits And Obligations Act  Mr. Speaker, it is a pleasure for me to rise this afternoon to speak to Bill C-23. My colleagues have expressed many things which are wrong with the bill. I would like to commend my colleague from Calgary Centre who has worked very hard on the bill, has analyzed the bill, has shown what is wrong with the bill and has put forward amendments.

Occupational Health And Safety  Mr. Speaker, on February 17, Tara McDonald was tragically murdered while she worked alone on a late shift at a fast food establishment in my riding. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and the friends of Tara whose young life ended far too early and with so much promise left unfulfilled.

Export Development Corporation  Mr. Speaker, arm's length, my foot. The EDC signs cheques faster than the HRDC minister after she has had her fifth cup of coffee. If $1 billion for Amtrak were not enough, how about an additional $145 million for good measure? There is plenty more where that comes from and your privacy is guaranteed.

Export Development Corporation  Mr. Speaker, if you are a debt plagued American company and your own government turns off the money supply, where do you go to secure a desperately needed line of credit? The Export Development Corporation. Canada will help. EDC officials confirmed this morning that the sky is the limit for Amtrak loans.
