Keeping Canada's Economy and Jobs Growing Act  The Conservatives simply shrug their shoulders and tell Canadians to take solace in the fact that we are better off than countries like Greece. That is an insult. It is an insult to the hard-working Canadians who lost their jobs in the last recession through no fault of their own. It is time to act decisively on job creation so that the middle-class citizens who built our country can finally get back on their feet.

People in Canada need to be heard on this issue. It affects hard-working Canadians and seniors whose retirement savings are once again going up in smoke. The Minister of Finance agrees that we should be flexible and pragmatic, so let us bring the debate to the floor of the chamber.

Myself and many hard-working Canadians believe that the government should, therefore, reconsider its planned spending cuts, in light of global economic instability. More and more often I am hearing from seniors who are unable to stretch their pension cheques to meet the inflationary increase in the cost of living.

As I said to my other colleague, the NDP wants transaction fees to go up. Financial transaction fees are things that impact hard-working families that can ill afford to pay them.

This year alone, hundreds of thousands of hard-working Canadians will be struck with catastrophic illness or serious physical injuries that prevent them from making a contribution in the workplace and providing for themselves and their families.

House debate  We are looking for ways to harmonize these investments with a balanced budget, without imposing a tax hike on hard-working Canadians.

The Economy  Glibly suggesting that we are in a relatively stronger position than countries like Greece is an insult to the hard-working Canadians and seniors who are worried about making ends meet. The time is now for the government to finally acknowledge the legitimate concerns of Canadians, act on the evidence and present a credible plan to safeguard Canadian jobs and our economy.

The Economy  The reckless political opportunism will force an unnecessary election, Canada's fourth in just seven years. Our Conservative government's focus remains on hard-working Canadians and their families notwithstanding the political opportunism of the Liberal leader and his coalition partners.

Canada-U.S. Relations  We are focused on building the economic prosperity of this country. We are standing up for ordinary, hard-working Canadians. Why are they not?

Gasoline Prices  The price would be at least 6.5¢ less were it not for the new federal HST charge. When will the federal government start making life affordable for hard-working Canadians instead of raising prices at the pumps, and to add insult to injury, giving away almost $3 billion of taxpayers' money to rich and powerful oil companies? It saddens me to say this but what does the government have against hard-working Canadians?

Abolition of Early Parole Act  By passing this legislation we will send a message to these offenders and to Canadians that we will no longer support a system that favours offenders who steal hundreds of thousands of dollars, and sometimes millions, from hard-working Canadians. I urge all hon. members to join us in taking a stand today to end this unfair, two-tiered parole system. I urge all members of the House to vote in favour of Bill C-59.
