Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I want to say how much I enjoyed serving with my hon. colleague from St. Albert—Edmonton. He always brings a great deal of intelligence and rational thought to these situations. First, as the House knows, the government and Parliament are not limited to simply creating a law that repeats the Carter decision; Parliament is perfectly entitled to go forward further and protect liberty interests that were not recognized in Carter.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I will be sharing my time with the hon. member for Oakville North—Burlington. This is a very difficult bill and subject for us to deal with. In this case, the sanctity of life, something that all of us cherish, conflicts with the liberty interests protected under section 7 of the charter.

International Labour Conference  Madam Speaker, I have the honour to table, in both official languages, the report to Parliament with respect to the C190 - Violence and Harassment Convention adopted in June 2019 of the International Labour Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Inter-Parliamentary Task Force to Combat Online Anti-Semitism  Mr. Speaker, Monday was Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. As the Jewish new year begins, there has been an alarming increase in anti-Semitic incidents across the globe, most of which originate online. We need to find better ways to combat online hate. As such, we have launched the Inter-Parliamentary Task Force to Combat Online Anti-Semitism.

I am proud to say that 84% of the money given to support Quebec taxpayers and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic came from the federal government. During the pandemic, we worked hard with our counterparts in Quebec and the rest of Canada.

I have to disagree with him. I think the government has been outstanding in its response to the pandemic thus far. At the beginning of the pandemic, people were quite desperate. People were losing jobs and were not used to all that was going on, and the importance was getting out a benefit that put as much money as possible into people's pockets.

I will be splitting my time with the hon. member for Malpeque. I am very pleased to speak today in support of the legislation before us, which would help Canadians and businesses as they face challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I have faith in health care professionals across Canada, including nurses and doctors. I believe that the great majority of physicians and nurses in the country are dedicated professionals who do their jobs appropriately and follow the law. In those cases where physicians or nurse practitioners have violated the law, I strongly suggest that members report them to the professional order of their province and to the police, and justice should prevail.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I greatly appreciate my colleague's question. I also commend him for his speech. In my view, we must make a distinction between people whose death is reasonably foreseeable and those whose death is not reasonably foreseeable. I believe the 90-day period could be 75 days or 120 days.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, in 2016 at committee, the requirement to see a specialist was suggested by a number of the groups that appeared. It would be a specialist in the area of the condition the person had. Concerns were expressed that two doctors, or a nurse practitioner and a doctor, who did not have expertise in the condition would not be able to properly assess the individual.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I will be sharing my time with the hon. member for Pontiac. I want to start by saying that this subject is no doubt difficult for many Canadians watching. It is one in which we try to reconcile our deeply held view that life is precious with the right to liberty and the right to make our own independent decisions.

With respect to the hereditary chiefs, I acknowledge that outside the limited territory that the band council controls, there is power of the hereditary chiefs that has been recognized, and again there has to be negotiation with them.
