Fisheries committee  To the officials, I really do appreciate what you've had to say. Could let the committee know, quickly if you can, when it comes to gaps in the science that you feel you might have, what those gaps might actually be when it comes to aquaculture? Could you identify those in 45 seconds or less?

Fisheries committee  That's fine. Could you update this committee? My understanding is that the net-pen locations, particularly on the west coast, have a lease or an agreement to stay in a certain spot for a certain period of time. When do those agreements come up for renewal, expiry or discussion?

Fisheries committee  Chair, I have a question for my colleague who moved the motion. I noticed there isn't a specific request for travel, but would travel be something that is or should be anticipated by the committee should this motion come into effect? Chair, I would like to know when you lost the power to coordinate the necessary witnesses and schedules.

Fisheries committee  I don't know anybody who comes to the Government of Canada and says they will gladly pay for what it is currently paying for if it will just give them the chance. They do so because they would have to out of necessity of building the industry and building the capacity. The Government of Canada started this a long time ago, but now maybe it's time to think about this differently.

Fisheries committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Given that this is my third or fourth time going through a small craft harbours report in this committee, I wasn't going to offer too much more insofar as what I know or don't know—or think I know or don't know—but I just had to pipe in today, and I want to thank the officials for being here.

Fisheries committee  Do those larger boats have a different capacity for fishing? They would probably have longer ranges and the ability to stay out longer at sea. Would that be correct?

Fisheries committee  I live in Alberta—don't hold that against me—but I'm very interested in fisheries. My background is fisheries and aquatic sciences. This is the stuff I love to talk about. I grew up on a farm, and the Government of Canada doesn't own a single piece of infrastructure between the farm gates on my farmer's land and the port of Vancouver.

Fisheries committee  To the department officials here, following what I think was some fairly intense political pressure, the government relented and exempted fishing fuel from the proposed—or the now-implemented—carbon tax for the approximately 46,000 fishers in Canada. However, there are all kinds of incidental costs that fishers will bear as a result of the carbon tax.

Fisheries committee  I look forward to that. The other question I have is with regard to—

Fisheries committee  Have you considered increasing the availability of the preferred prey, the chinook salmon, for the southern resident killer whale through any science-based targeted predator control program? I am talking about a program to reduce the pinniped predation around the estuaries and river environments where young salmon are present.

Fisheries committee  My last question is on the illegal, unreported and unregulated catch. What are you going to do to resolve the issue of unreported catch, specifically unreported catch on the Fraser River?
