Criminal Code  It is the story of an 81-year old retired businessman and friend of mine, Blake Nicholls, who was murdered by a career criminal with 50 prior convictions, including arson, armed robbery and theft. In fact, this individual was wanted in another jurisdiction for allegedly attacking his then girlfriend with a hammer. The man attacked my friend Mr. Nicholls with a hammer out of misdirected revenge.

Canadian Human Rights Act  In addition, a few months ago, a medical clinic in Montreal that performs gender-affirming surgery was targeted by arson. The prejudice and violence are very real. That is why, over the past several years, the NDP has been introducing bills in the House of Commons of Canada to stand up for the rights of transgendered Canadians and protect them from discrimination.

Government Operations committee  The community mailbox sites pose added challenges for the older population, including staying safe in inclement weather and dealing with frozen locks and ice underfoot. There are also reports of community mailboxes being the target of vandalism, arson, and theft, translating to an increase in the number of victims should these mail stations become the norm. The positive impact of letter carriers on senior and community safety stretches far beyond the winter months.

Government Operations committee  I'm going to refer to one of my exhibits. There were 48,000 incidents of theft, vandalism, and arson in 130 communities between 2008 and 2013. Those are from the old boxes prior to the implementation of the five-point plan.

Justice  Last week, the urgent need for these protections was underlined when the Montreal clinic performing gender-affirming surgery, the only such clinic in Canada, was targeted by arson. The need is urgent. Will the government bring forward this legislation now to help prevent these kinds of hate crimes in the future?

Resumption of Debate on Address in Reply  One was beaten and robbed and another one was allegedly spat on, and a mosque in Peterborough was a target of arson. These are the actions of a hateful minority, and they do not represent the majority of Canadians. For every hateful individual, there were many more who stood up to condemn this violence, to say, “I will ride with you”, and to say, “this is not our Canada”.

Leopoldo has been charged with four crimes: incitement to commit violence, conspiracy, arson, and property damage. He is facing 12 years in prison. Criminal Code  Judges need to be able to stop them at that age. The crimes that youth are involved in include breaking and entering, arson, robbery, possession of stolen property and theft. Indeed, there is no victimless crime in these types of incidents. There is also a connection between group crimes and co-offending and the eventual formation of more structured criminal enterprises for youth and others.

Victims Bill of Rights Act  Each and every one of them said that what they really needed was information on the investigation into their missing loved one, information about the prosecution of the person responsible for the murder or harm to their missing loved one. We hear this from victims time and time again. My office in Mississauga was subject to an arson attack a number of years ago. If it were not for the media, we would not have heard anything about the investigation or the prosecution of the accused in that situation. I wonder if the member could tell us what she thinks about the right to information in the bill for victims, information about both the investigative part of any crime done to them and the prosecution of a perpetrator after someone is charged with that crime.
