Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act, 2023  Speaker, the reality is, as the member for Sherwood Park—Fort Saskatchewan argued before, that there is no other trade deal that Canada has that has implemented a carbon tax in it. I would argue, and it is a very reasonable argument that can be made, that what Ukraine does not need is a carbon tax; what it does need are weapons. When Bill C-57 went to committee, the member Sherwood Park—Fort Saskatchewan proposed amendments to the bill that would expedite the sending of weapons to Ukraine, and yet the NDP voted against that amendment to the bill.

Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act, 2023  Madam Speaker, the Conservative Party position has consistently been to vehemently oppose a carbon tax, so it is not surprising that we would oppose a carbon tax in a trade deal. What is surprising is the consistent and deliberate pro-Russian energy policy of the Liberal Party. Because we cannot build a pipeline in this country, we imported $400 million of Russian natural gas into Canada in 2021 because of a pro-Russian Liberal energy policy.

Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act, 2023  If we go back and look at their record on speaking to this, they did not start talking about a carbon tax or pricing pollution until well into the debate. It was as though, at some point, they realized what their angle was going to be on it and then that became their trumpeting point.

Carbon Pricing  The Bloc Québécois fully supports the Liberals when it comes to drastically increasing the carbon tax. Two million Canadians are using food banks each month. Farms are going out of business because the carbon tax is crushing them. Will the government wake up, do the right thing and cancel their April 1 tax hike?

Carbon Pricing  However, the Prime Minister wants to punish farmers instead of rewarding them for their environmental stewardship. Why will the Prime Minister not cancel his carbon tax increase on farmers to make sure we can grow food for Canadians?

Carbon Pricing  Speaker, today the costly Bloc-Liberal coalition will have the opportunity to vote on a Conservative motion to cancel the April 1 carbon tax increase. With 800,000 Quebeckers lining up at food banks every month, the Bloc Québécois and the Liberals think it is a good idea to raise taxes. What is worse, the Bloc members want to drastically increase the carbon tax, which has a direct impact on the cost of groceries in Quebec.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  I have just two brief points, Chair. First of all, I listened to Mr. Battiste's comments about the impact of the carbon tax. I would note that Atlantic Canada was the one that got the carve-out. I'm not sure if he's suggesting that it should be “uncarved out”. He might want to clarify that. He can clarify that during the study.

Indigenous Affairs  These are communities, many of them remote, northern communities, in my area that rely on heating fuels and rely on transportation, either by vehicle on the ice road in the winter or by aircraft, just to be able to get out of their community and to access critical services. They need to use gas to do that, and this carbon tax is driving up the cost of everything. Why do the Liberals not finally axe the tax for good?

Carbon Pricing  I do not think anybody has ever said that. The question was about fairness of the applicability of the carbon tax and how it is not being applied fairly. It is being applied politically at this point in time, as opposed to judiciously across the country. I did not hear one response in that jumble that actually told us why it costs less for Atlantic Canadians than people on the Prairies are being charged.

Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, our Liberal colleague just gave us a glimpse into the Liberal psyche. She said we never talk about the rebates when it comes to the carbon tax. My colleague from Battle River—Crowfoot hit the nail on the head: We do not have to give the money back to Canadians if we do not take it in the first place. My colleague mentioned a couple of really great things when it comes to Conservative principles.

Committees of the House  It is time to make sure that we bring some common sense back to the agenda and objectives of government, to make sure that when it comes to the carbon tax, we take those billions of dollars out of the hands of bureaucrats and politicians in our nation's capital and make sure that we bring down the price of food. I recently heard a heartbreaking story of a senior at a grocery store who had to put items back because her bill was too expensive.

Committees of the House  I am wondering if the member could talk about how the increased cost of food is a feature of the Liberal carbon tax. It is designed to make things unaffordable for Canadians. I wonder if my friend from Kenora could opine on that.

Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, that is a very good point. The government has been very transparent that the whole point of the carbon tax is to try to change behaviours by making things more expensive. We are seeing it with gas, groceries and home heating. Unfortunately, it seems to be working too well and making things more expensive for Canadians.

Committees of the House  Unfortunately, we have not seen a viable climate plan from the government. It brought forward a carbon tax, which is a very good government revenue-creating device. It is a great way to tax Canadians and make life more unaffordable, but it continues to miss climate target after climate target under this plan.

Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, I wonder why, in spite of the hardships that increasing the carbon tax year after year is having on Canadians and that it is not making any environmental difference, the Liberals, supported by the NDP and the Bloc, are insisting on moving forward with this.
