Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, I was appreciative of the member's preamble about General Motors investing again in Canada, bringing jobs in the manufacturing sector back to us. The opportunity for all strategy to reduce poverty includes employment and pay equity. The member was just getting into the pharmacare and the fact that our government was saving over $13 billion in drug costs for Canadians.

Climate Change Accountability Act  Madam Speaker, I thank the member across the way for a tremendous presentation on some very good work that she has done. I just came from the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development and we had the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada there. We were looking at its budget and the main estimates, which have gone from $800,000 a few years ago to $3 million in this coming year.

Anita Stewart  Mr. Speaker, it is with great sadness that I inform the House of the passing of Anita Stewart, the University of Guelph's food laureate. Anita was the soul behind Canada's local food movement and received the Order of Canada for her contributions to our understanding of what food means to us as Canadians.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, doing a limited-scale audit of an operation during a pandemic is actually a way of managing risk on that operation. As a small business owner, audits would give me some corrections that I would be able to make before problems got out of hand. As a businessman, I did not like auditors coming in either, but I did find them helpful in terms of managing the risk of my operation.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, I am having a lot of trouble squaring the conflicting ways the Conservatives are looking at audits during a pandemic. On one hand they are asking the civil service to provide thousands of pages of documents to review in the middle of the pandemic, then not reviewing the documents, and on the other hand they are saying that people are cheating the system with the CERB payments by staying at home, not wanting to work.

Criminal Code  Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for her contribution this afternoon. Earlier in her speech, she talked about our role as members of Parliament. I wonder if she could comment on the role of the court systems that are also looking at legislation we put forward, and then ruling on it when it comes back to us for review, and looking at how we could make our legislation align with the court systems that we have in Canada.

Small Business  Mr. Speaker, we have seen employment numbers in my riding rebound to 75% of prepandemic numbers. We have witnessed small businesses changing and innovating their delivery models to continue serving their customers and our communities. At the same time, we know more support will be needed in 2021.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, looking at the motion before us today, it is really an exercise in micromanagement, which we often see from the Conservative Party. Our role as government is to have direction and oversight in the strategy and to bring people together. As the chair of the all-party Parliamentary Health Research Caucus, last night we had researchers from across Canada providing their research on vaccine development.

Committees of the House  Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present to the House petition e-2672, which was initiated by a constituent of mine, Maxwell Parr. It received 1,891 signatures. It calls on the Government of Canada to end the militarization of police forces, actively combat systemic and institutional racism, continue to recognize Canada's own role in carrying out violence against people of colour and actively encourage other nations to do the same.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, similar to colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I do not see this as an issue of dividing Canadians, I see this as an issue to be able to reach all types of Canadians, coming from different experiences and different health needs. We will be addressing the needs of all Canadians through this bill, as well as through ongoing legislative review of this legislation.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I thank the hon. member for Chatham-Kent—Leamington, where we also have family members. As we have these discussions, we do see the cross-ties across Canada as we look at these issues. The disability community is involved with the consultation process and will continue to be involved.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I apologize if I left that impression with the hon. member. All life is dignified in Canada. When my mother was passing away in Winnipeg I spent her last few days with her. Family members were looking at the question of how long to keep the machine going. My mom, in a moment of lucidity, came back to me when my brothers and sisters were out of the room and she said to me, “It's part of my decision as well, dear.”

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I do not mean to talk down to the hon. member across the way because I would not do that. The courts make decisions that then come back to Parliament so that we can review the decisions we have made on legislation to see whether further amendments are needed. This is a case where a court is telling us that there are further amendments needed.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, before I get started, I will let you know I am splitting my time with the member for Markham—Stouffville. Today, I have the opportunity to participate in this debate on Bill C-7 from my riding in Guelph. Before I get going on the debate, I would like to recognize that Guelph is situated on the ancestral homelands of the Anishinabe people, specifically the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, the member for Calgary Signal Hill is the member of Parliament for my brother, and I appreciate the effort he is putting forward in reaching out to his constituents to find out what they are thinking on the issue. Our role as members of Parliament is to put aside where we may want to head in favour of finding out from our constituents how we can best represent them.
