Agriculture committee  Thank you, Mr. Atamanenko and Mr. Smith. We're out of time. We're going to now move to the second sector. We'll take a couple of minutes. We've got to fire up the screens. We have a video conference, and we'll be back in two minutes.

Agriculture committee  I've been here at this table since 2006, and pork producers and cattle producers have been coming to us saying they need help. They're not getting the subsidies they were promised. We're probably going to be faced now with dairy farmers coming and saying the government promised them this money, but they're not sure what it is, and asking when they are going to get it and what's going to happen.

Agriculture committee  Thanks very much, Chair. My question is one of process. I'd like to read for you something that Marcel Groleau, president of the Union des producteurs agricoles du Québec, said the following, and I would like you to comment on it: “This concession is not consistent with the House of Commons unanimous motion on the protection of supply management.”...All through the negotiations, no such mention was made in the reports to the industry.

Agriculture committee  We'd start with the NDP, go to the Conservatives, give the Liberal another chance, and then go back to the Conservatives. That should take us to the time we should be adjourning. Mr. Atamanenko, you have three minutes. Oh, I'm sorry. Madame Raynault, go ahead for three minutes.

Agriculture committee  Jim, you talked about the amount in tonnes we were going to be able to ship over to Europe, and I think you mentioned that the Europeans will have unlimited access to Canada for beef and pork. Did I hear that right? Are they currently exporting, and will they be able to export as much as they want to Canada?

November 5th, 2013Committee meeting

Alex AtamanenkoNDP

Agriculture committee  Practically speaking, they don't export a lot of beef and pork outside of Europe. Is that correct for European farmers?

Agriculture committee  I see our chair is right on that clock. Thanks again for coming, folks. Kathleen, you probably can guess the question I'm going to ask, but I think it's an important one. It deals with GMOs. There's a different attitude toward GMOs in Europe than in Canada. Many countries don't tolerate these crops or products, yet we're talking about $100 million in grain and oilseeds, and $100 million in sugar...potential exports.
