Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, unfortunately I found a lot of partisan comments in the member's intervention in contrast to the comments from the member for Elgin—Middlesex—London. This as a non-partisan issue. I was visiting businesses in downtown Guelph this morning and I spoke with one of the business owners.

Indigenous Affairs  Mr. Speaker, since 2015, our government has made it a priority to improve water infrastructure on reserves. We have come a long way in ending long-term drinking water advisories on reserve and preventing short-term advisories from becoming long term. In my riding, many constituents and groups, like the Rotary Club of Guelph, Water First, Wellington Water Watchers, University of Guelph researchers, Shared Value Solutions and many other businesses, care about these efforts and the vital work that still needs to be done.

Employment  Mr. Speaker, cities have been at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic. In my riding, the City of Guelph's budget has been hit with unexpected extra costs and transit revenue losses. I am proud of our government's Safe Restart Agreement, which has provided $11 million in additional support to Guelph through this emergency funding.

Petitions  Mr. Speaker, I would like to table the electronic petition, e-2663, which has 5,654 signatures on it, on behalf of my constituents. It calls on the Government of Canada to ban the practice of carding in Canada. The practice of carding, which is random street checks to obtain identifying information by police, has had a disproportionate impact on Black, racialized and indigenous communities and it has not led to a reduction in crime.

Government Business No. 1  Madam Speaker, we have just had the worst results in Ontario since the beginning of the pandemic, with 700 cases reported on Monday morning. We are looking at closing our constituency office again. In light of where we were in April, and the fact that we have never had this bad a result in Ontario, could the hon. member comment on how serious this is right now?

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, one of the recurring themes in the hon. member's speech was encouraging debate in this place. A week ago today, the members of the House were debating Bill C-3. I participated in the debate on the Thursday, a debate that was going to make significant changes and improvements to Canada's boarder agency.

Criminal Code  Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for Brampton West both for her speech today and for work as a health professional. Listening to her, I wonder what her patients must be thinking of her as she speaks now in the House on their behalf. I have had many conversations with constituents who are facing the need to have this legislation improved.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, the member's presentation was very thoughtful and intelligent. He has presented us with a very personal choice that each of us will have at some point in our life and death experience, some of us through suffering and some of us through other ways. I am sure we will be passing in different ways.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I remember that as we went through the very difficult discussions on Bill C-14, within the Catholic community in Guelph, to which I belong, there were a lot of concerns around advance directives and conscience rights and the protection of conscience rights within the Catholic community in particular.

Citizenship Act  Madam Speaker, on December 15, 2015, the Prime Minister accepted the final report of the commission. Justice Murray Sinclair, Chief Wilton Littlechild and Dr. Marie Wilson worked on this report, which resulted in the 94 calls to action. These calls to action were made to the government not in order of preference but as calls that we had to address together.

Citizenship Act  Madam Speaker, it is a question of whether the glass is half empty or half full. We look at the progress we have made in five years and the discussions we have had. Yes, during the election campaign there was a court order that came forward. We are now addressing and looking at that, doing things the right way in terms of the settlements that need to be done.

Citizenship Act  Madam Speaker, I have driven the Yellowhead Highway many times in the past, and when I do I always think of the Métis, the hunters, the people on horseback and the freedom that they had. What we want is for them to live within the freedom context of the nation that we now all are in together.

Citizenship Act  Madam Speaker, there are 93 other calls to action, and those are action items. I have visited the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. There are five boil water advisories that we are working on together. The call to do it together is really what we are talking about, not enforcing our actions on them but working on solutions together.

Citizenship Act  Madam Speaker, I will be sharing my time with the member for Fredericton. As has been said by other speakers today, we are on the traditional territory of the Algonquin people. That is historic. That is something more than just a phrase on paper. I was born on Treaty 1. I was born in the land of the Anishinabe and Swampy Cree in the city now known as Winnipeg, at the forks of the Red River and the Assiniboine River, all the history for thousands of years of indigenous people living in the area that is Treaty 1.

Citizenship Act  Madam Speaker, as the hon. member was speaking, I was thinking about the things that were done in the words of the Crown. As we developed our country the indigenous people were often placed subservient to the Crown. Recommendation 94 would actually bring indigenous people to the same level as the Crown in terms of prominence, and for newcomers to Canada to know that the indigenous peoples are prominent in our history.
