Government Operations committee  Thank you for the question. Earlier, in 2021, we awarded a contract to continue the maintenance and operational programs at the radar stations. Once again, questions on the needs and plans for modernization are better directed to the Department of National Defence, because they control and manage equipment needs.

Government Operations committee  At the Vancouver shipyard, there are over 1,000 employees. Those employees would be from the Vancouver and the Lower Mainland areas. Among those 1,000-plus employees, about 700-plus would be what we call the blue-collar workforce, people building the ships, welding and doing all the technical aspects of shipbuilding.

The key projects here, after the ones currently in implementation—i.e., the multi-purpose vessels and the polar icebreaker projects—are in definition. The implementation of those vessels will be over quite a few years.

Indeed, as mentioned by my deputy, there is a very active program of work at the Seaspan Vancouver shipyard. There are numerous projects under way. The first one to note for this committee would be the completion of the offshore fishery science vessels.

As for the Vancouver shipyard, we have not yet achieved target state, as Mr. Matthews specified, but we are nearly there. We are working on a corrective action plan to deal with the last elements of achieving target state.

Public Accounts committee  Concerning the Irving shipyard, a full assessment will be carried out in fall 2021. Our goal is to obtain the assessment results in early 2022. We will quite possibly find that it is in the same position as the Vancouver shipyard and develop an action and correction plan to finalize the process.

Public Accounts committee  Things will be a bit more complex for the Davie shipyard because the selection process that will take place over the summer will have to be completed, and then the framework agreement must be signed. So as we get closer to signing the framework agreement, the details of target state for Davie will be discussed.
