It seems to me that we don't have a lot of data since there's only been one import in the half-year this has been in place. We don't really have much data to go on for the impact this is having on the sector, and we only have six months left to go with the remittance order.

Agriculture committee  The ice cream, yes. Okay, so there's been one importation in six months. This is supposed to be in effect for one year according to the remission order.

Agriculture committee  Okay, so we're halfway through it, and there's been one import of ice cream, basically.

Agriculture committee  Okay. Will the imports under this affect our supply-managed sectors' quotas at all?

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Thank you to the witnesses for being here today. I just want to start by establishing some facts as I understand them. This Special Import Measures Act, the remission order, came into force on June 9, 2022. Is that correct?

Agriculture committee  Okay, so it's the remission order. How much has been imported in the approximately six months since it came into effect?

Agriculture committee  It was $8.55 million. Was any of that in the supply-managed sector?

Agriculture committee  I was going to ask a question very much along the lines of my colleagues. Sharing a meal with people is something we do often, although you're right that it's maybe not so much since the pandemic. When I read about Anita Stewart and what her mission was and when I was listening to you read the letter from her sons, it seemed like a lot of the emphasis was on local Canadian food.

Agriculture committee  Thank you very much, Mr. Chair. I'm going to leave some time for Mr. El-Khoury, who would also like to have a question. I just want to say that I worked on a farm in the Holland Marsh growing up. I was pulling carrots and lettuce, and I know it's changed. What we're producing now has changed because of trade and what we're competitive in.

Agriculture committee  Yes, so what can the feds do? I just want to intervene to ask about the solution. What can we do to help that?

Agriculture committee  Thank you so much. Yes, I think it is a concern. I just want to make sure that Mr. El-Khoury has the chance to ask a question as well, but thank you for that.

Agriculture committee  I have just a simple question. The clerk mentioned that it could be nine years. Could it be any number of years other than eight? Is eight the only number that's been precluded by amendment LIB-2?

Agriculture committee  Thank you. Thank you, Mr. Barlow, for explaining your position on this. I think we agree that within 10 years there should be clean tech that could address this. If we all agree on that, why not just leave it in force on the tenth anniversary of the day when it comes into force?

Agriculture committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. In response to Mr. Turnbull's comment, the part that concerned me was in CPC-2, the first paragraph, where it says that it comes into force “on the day that is the 10th anniversary of the day on which this Act comes into force, unless, before that day, their coming into force is postponed by a resolution—whose text is established under subsection (2)—passed by both Houses”.
