Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. You answered my question.

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  Let me go on, Mr. Chan. I heard you say in your opening statement that Meta does not unfairly benefit from news and that, in fact, the reverse is true. But we all know that Facebook's main source of success is on the data it collects from its users—I think 22 million, according to Ms.

Canadian Heritage committee  Do you have any statistics to back this up that you can share with our committee?

Canadian Heritage committee  We've heard already in this committee that you've entered into deals with publishers in Canada. Why would you do that if there was no value to you?

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  Okay. Thank you. I think my time is up.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Chair. We have been speaking about good journalism today, so I'd like to draw the committee's attention to a Wall Street Journal article from last May entitled “Facebook Deliberately Caused Havoc in Australia to Influence New Law, Whistleblowers Say”. It says: Last year when Facebook blocked news in Australia in response to potential legislation making platforms pay publishers for content, it also took down the pages of Australian hospitals, emergency services and charities.

Canadian Heritage committee  Do we need more support from the Canadian government as well to make that happen, like the local journalism initiative, for example? Do we need to add to those programs to be able to help more news organizations qualify for this new structure?

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. I will go back to Mr. McKay with Google and these agreements that we know have already been signed with some news producers in Canada. In these agreements, does Google insist on a non-disclosure agreement, and if so, why?

October 18th, 2022Committee meeting

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  Is the non-disclosure agreement part of that mutually agreed term?

Canadian Heritage committee  Without asking you for details about how much each news producer is getting, can you tell us how Google decides how much each organization will get?

October 18th, 2022Committee meeting

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  With these agreements that are already in place—I understand they are two- or three-year agreements—would Google be prepared to renew all of those agreements if Bill C-18 does not pass in the House of Commons?

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you for that. I'll go over to Mr. Scott. I appreciated, in your opening statement, your reframing the argument to a public interest perspective rather than the public versus the tech giants. You said that the revenue has to go towards the production of news. Tell us how you see that best happening.

October 18th, 2022Committee meeting

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. I'll go to Mr. Kevin Desjardins. We've been talking about how, under the QCJO requirements, an organization should have two journalists. What do you think about that? Do you agree that we need more journalists and that anything that will promote and help organizations to hire more journalists is a good thing?

October 18th, 2022Committee meeting

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  I'm sorry, Cal. I'm running out of time. Can you sum it up for us? You saw viewership grow during that time, I understand.

October 18th, 2022Committee meeting

Lisa HepfnerLiberal

Canadian Heritage committee  Can you talk about the importance of CHCH to the communities of Hamilton, Halton and Niagara, and how it has led to the extremely high viewership numbers? Can you also expand that to talk about the experience of the pandemic and what sort of reaction you got from communities for the service that CHCH provides?
