Foreign Affairs committee  What we are talking about here is, as the mover of the motion said, he wants to get an update on the Islamic situation in Pakistan. It's not about playing politics and saying the minister is not coming. Let me just say this; don't shut me up. So I am saying my amendment that says “all” just perfectly well fits in with the intent of this thing here and that we would say that when it is appropriate, the minister, during his scheduled time, will come in front of the committee.

Foreign Affairs committee  Mr. Chairman, my intent in the motion is to get an update on the current crisis in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. If we invite the minister, which is what I want to do, and the minister says “Sorry, I can't come this day because...”, that's fine. I'm not going to have a cardiac over it.

Foreign Affairs committee  Chairman, we can deal with pretty expeditiously: That pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) the committee invites the responsible minister and appropriate senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Canadian International Development Agency, and other relevant departments to discuss the current crisis in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Procedure and House Affairs committee  I'm not a theologian and I'm not going to pretend to be one. There's certainly been a lot of comment offered by people from the Islamic community suggesting that the wearing of a veil in this particular issue of face covering is not a religious requirement but rather a cultural choice. I'm not going to decide that question.

Canada Elections Act  If it were not for the fact that some politicians have raised this issue, I am not sure it would have materialized as a major concern for Canadians, their elected representatives or observers in the political arena in our country. I read with interest a quotation from the head of the Islamic Association of Nova Scotia, who said of this issue: There was no controversy. The Muslim community never complained. The women would gladly take off their veil for a woman official.

Public Safety committee  It's important to remember that the list contained a number of suspects who were clearly identified by the RCMP in an investigation as Islamic extremists. Mr. Arar and Ms. Mazigh were add-ons to that list. So a number of people on that list were legitimately classified as Islamic extremists. The mistake was that when they added on Mr.

Public Safety committee  Mazigh, as part of a request to U.S. Customs, were included in a list that resulted in their being inaccurately described as “Islamic Extremist individuals suspected of being linked to the Al Qaeda terrorist movement”. After this, Mr. Arar moved in and out of the United States on two occasions without incident. Indeed, Justice O'Connor concludes that he could not ascertain with any certainty what steps were taken by the Americans as a result of the request.
