Canadian Heritage committee  I mentioned earlier the increases in hate crimes provoked by the extreme right. In anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, there's a 67% increase; in crimes related to sexual orientation, there's a 64% increase; in race and ethnicity, there's a 6% increase. This is over the course of the last couple of years.

Public Accounts committee  Average Canadians, whether it's on CERB clawbacks, TFSA overpayments, or faith-based charitable foundations, have been targeted to the point of persecution. There's even a very strong smell of Islamophobia with the CRA's persecution of some of these faith-based charities. At the same time, we see the head of the CRA, who is also in charge of the charitable part, commenting on the Trudeau foundation that if they violate it knowingly, the CRA may just let them off with a training recommendation or perhaps a strongly worded memo.

Public Accounts committee  It's before the Ontario supreme court, which publicly rebuked the CRA. It's the Muslim Association of Canada. I've looked at their file and looked at the Islamophobia, perhaps, involved in the CRA's harassment of that charity and other faith-based charities. You'll go after those charities, but on this matter, you can't even comment on whether it has the potential for you to even look at it.

Genocide Education  Remembering is vital, but education is equally important, if not more so. Racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other forms of hate are proliferating today at an alarming rate, especially online. We need our children to know about the history of genocide and where hate can lead. I want to congratulate the Foundation for Genocide Education and its founder, Heidi Berger, for working with the Government of Quebec over the past eight years to create an online teaching guide featuring case studies of nine 20th century genocides.

Request for Emergency Debate  Madam Speaker, I rise today to request an emergency debate concerning the very serious rise in hate crimes particularly targeting the Muslim and Jewish community. With the rise of Islamophobia and anti-Semitism on the heels of record-high levels of violence against these communities, we need the debate in this chamber to discuss how serious this is and debate solutions to the problems.

Information & Ethics committee  I think that it doesn't take a big stretch to see how ideologically motivated, violent extremist organizations, particularly those based in the United States, are trying to amplify certain messages that divide target minority communities, whether it's promoting anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia or transphobia, and undermining democratic principles and values. Lots of folks are out there doing so in a non-transparent way. They're not state actors; therefore, the ability of governments like ours to address them is a challenge.

Foreign Affairs committee  Elghawaby, who had not yet been appointed Canada’s Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, which was incredibly critical of Quebec and Bill‑21. You said: “There is a deep, discriminatory meaning to this law. It clearly runs counter to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Diversity and Inclusion  Speaker, once again, we need to talk about Amira Elghawaby, whom the Prime Minister appointed despite opposition from Quebeckers and who began her first tour this week as special representative on combatting Islamophobia. Right away on her first stop in Ontario, she began attacking Quebec's Bill 21 on secularism. In her own words, her job is to attack legislation like that. This is how she chose to use her first official appearance.

Ramadan  This is also a time to reinforce the cultural bonds of our communities that make our Canadian mosaic so great. As we recently marked the first United Nations International Day to Combat Islamophobia, let us reinforce our commitment to rejecting hate in all its forms in Canada and across the world. I wish all Muslims observing Ramadan a peaceful and blessed celebration with family and friends as we really begin this important journey together.

Canadian Heritage committee  Were you consulted when it came time to appoint Ms. Elghawaby as Canada's special representative on combatting Islamophobia? For example, did you advise the people who had to do the vetting to go and look at her Twitter account and other social media and her past statements? There seems to be a trend within the departments, and it concerns me that something as serious as the Community Media Advocacy Centre case hasn't received a more obvious response from all the departments.

Government Appointments  Speaker, I was with the Prime Minister on Sunday in Quebec City, and we saw that Quebeckers from all walks of life stood shoulder to shoulder with Muslim Canadians on the sombre occasion of the sixth anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting. The appointment of the special representative to combat Islamophobia is a recognition of and builds on the foundation of leadership of Quebeckers and Canadians to fight racism and discrimination in all its forms. The special representative has clarified and apologized for the impact of her remarks, and she has shown very clearly a willingness to work with all Canadians to combat Islamophobia.

Official Languages  Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister is dividing Canada's people. His anti-Islamophobia advisor is an example of that. He set out to divide Quebeckers and Canadians by sanctioning Quebec bashing yet again. Another example is how he made his West Island MPs on the official languages committee attack the protection of the French language.

Government Appointments  Speaker, yesterday, the leader of the Bloc Québécois met with the federal representative to combat Islamophobia, Amira Elghawaby. Ms. Elghawaby, who has the full support of the Prime Minister, has made headlines since her appointment for numerous statements against Quebeckers. Even the Quebec Liberal lieutenant was insulted.
