Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. My first question is for Cal Millar. Cal Millar is my former boss at CHCH news. I appreciated the rundown of the history of CHCH, from your perspective. As you know, I started there in August 2001 and worked there right up until my election last year. I witnessed first-hand a lot of those changes you mentioned.

Canadian Heritage committee  If that's the case, do you see a problem with Hockey Canada condoning this behaviour? More than condoning the behaviour, do you see a problem when there are no consequences, when these allegations come forward and there are no consequences to players? There's a fund that pays off the victim.

Canadian Heritage committee  I'm sorry. It's a little off topic.

Canadian Heritage committee  Let me go to another witness, Mr. Brind'Amour, and ask the same question. Both of you said that Hockey Canada took appropriate action at the time, yet there are changes now being made so that players have to participate in the action. Do you think Hockey Canada, from the top, has been condoning this behaviour by maintaining a fund through which players face no consequences for their actions?

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you very much, Madam Chair. I would like to begin my questions with Ms. Skinner. In your opening statement, you said this toxic violence is not a specific hockey problem, yet the stories we're hearing around Hockey Canada are different from the stories of abuse we're hearing around other sports.

Canadian Heritage committee  We've heard a couple of times even today that Bill C-18 would affect journalistic independence somehow, that the government would somehow have more influence on news publishers, or Facebook and Google might have some power to direct news operations. Can you speak to that? From my perspective it's actually the opposite, because this is a bill in which news producers negotiate directly with the tech giants.

Canadian Heritage committee  Should we be concerned about this access of power?

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. That's an excellent segue, because we do have the example of Australia. We have this legislation. It's in place. We've seen what's happened, and yet we're still seeing a lot of.... I mean, we heard today that this bill is as likely to kill journalism as save it. But we have an example.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. I think I have only 30 seconds left. I'm wondering, Ms. Ageson, if I can ask you about your concerns about eligibility. We heard in our last meeting a suggestion that rather than changing the terms of eligibility, the Canadian government should offer more incentives so that more platforms can come online and become eligible and hire more journalists.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. I would like to direct my questions to Mr. Kint in the room here. Thank you very much for your time today. I'm wondering if you can go back to this idea of the imbalance of power and explain how this happens. How do the tech giants like Facebook and Google use their access of power in this marketplace in terms of the editorial decisions they make and the algorithmic decisions they make?

Canadian Heritage committee  I understand that Australia is currently reviewing its law. What do you see as improvements that could be made?

Canadian Heritage committee  You would look to Bill C-18 as an improvement on your legislation.
