The Economy  Speaker, what the member opposite just demonstrated is that he does not understand that what he has been talking about from the very beginning is austerity. It is withdrawing and not being there to support Canadians who need it, in the hopes that it will somehow make everything okay. What Canadians saw during this pandemic and what Canadians are seeing during this recovery is that by being there in targeted, measured ways, through things like making sure every family can afford to send their kids to the dentist and like making sure we are giving a top-up to the lowest-income renters, we support people in difficult times, something the Conservatives do not do anything about.

National Defence committee  They are limited support infrastructure, communications difficulties, fewer vessels of opportunity to assist with marine SAR, the austere environment and the vast distances involved. Moving a Cormorant helicopter from Greenwood, Nova Scotia to the High Arctic, complete with multiple refuelling stops and crew changes, is a real logistical feat.

Carbon Pricing  Speaker, I listened carefully during this question period, and all this talk of axes reminds me of a famous song from the Conservative chorus, which is the “Conservative Austerity Shuffle”. How does it go? Cut a little here, Cut a little there, Cut a lot here, Cut a lot there. Who was responsible? They were. Who was damaged by that? It was seniors, veterans, families, scientists, our environment and our international reputation.

Carbon Pricing  Where are they going to make cuts? The Conservative Party is the party of cuts, the party of austerity. Will the Conservatives cut support for our seniors or for our youth? Will they cut child care services or health care services? They need to have the courage to say it.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  It is interesting to talk about the economy, and we can see that next year will be full of uncertainty. The Bloc Québécois is concerned that this is being used as an excuse to bring in austerity measures in essential sectors. I am talking here about the Bloc Québécois' three priorities. First there are the health transfers, which are not negotiable. Budget cuts by the Liberals and the Conservatives are what got us into this situation in the first place.

Taxation  Speaker, there are some things that are natural, some things that go without saying and some things that just go together, like the words “Conservative” and “cuts”, “Conservative” and “austerity”, and even “Conservative” and “lack of compassion”. However, putting the words “Conservative” and “fight against poverty” together takes some doing. It is a bit of a stretch. It is like picturing a member of the Bloc Québécois getting up in the morning and singing O Canada while ironing the clothes they tore in a fit of outrage the day before.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  The same thing was done when a Liberal government was in office. Who paid the price? The Couillard government had to bring in austerity measures. What is worse, the Minister of Health is talking about effectiveness and results. He basically said that before we can talk about money, we need to agree on the objectives.

National Defence committee  We also have to look at purchasing aircraft types, if we're talking from a defence perspective, that are going to operate off austere runways, which are gravel or ice, which is something that the new CC-295 search and rescue aircraft cannot do. We also have a situation here in which infrastructure within communities will be built when major contracts start and we will have a secondary type of economy that will start, related to supplies or to the provision of transportation.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  The new Liberal-Conservative finance minister missed the opportunity to send a clear message of leadership and instead raised fears about potential austerity. The government is rehashing past measures, implementing what it already announced in the April budget, but there is no indication that it has a clear sense of direction, leaving the people who really need it out in the cold.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  It is the financial equivalent of gorging on Halloween candy, minus a few chocolate bars here and there, and telling the world that the diet is “going well”. Ironically, when Conservatives propose fiscal responsibility, Liberals brand it austerity. When Liberals feebly try to do the same, it is called fiscal discipline. We have been trying to reach across the aisle for months now. Just a few weeks ago, it looked like we had seen some progress when the finance minister endorsed our “pay as you go” approach to her cabinet colleagues.

Fall Economic Statement  That is problematic. In times of economic uncertainty, discipline is called for, but not austerity. That is why we want the most vulnerable, like seniors aged 65 to 75, to have support measures they can count on during this inflationary period. That is very important. We do not want austerity.

Canadian Workers  He, like all Conservatives, claimed to stand up for working people until he got into power and started attacking them. The looming threat of austerity is something we must also oppose. Working people did not create this crisis. Billionaires created it. We need to tax the rich, close the loopholes, shut down offshore tax havens and support working people, those on fixed incomes, CUPE members and all workers fighting back for our kids, our communities and economic justice for all of us.

Finance  For the government to turn its back on its fundamental responsibilities would be a mistake. It has to choose between discipline and austerity. Controlling spending is discipline. Turning its back on our most vulnerable is austerity. Will the government side with our most vulnerable?

The Economy  However, the Conservative economic action plan 2022 is in: cut employment insurance benefits, cut the Canadian pension plan, cut child care benefits and cut climate action cheques. That is typical Conservative austerity in the face of Canadians in need. We have the backs of Canadians. We are investing in them. That is our plan and that is what we are going to do.

Finance  Here the Conservatives are proposing to lower employment insurance benefits, Canadians' pension plans and the Canada child benefit. It is the typical Conservative austerity, once again. We will invest in Canadians. It is our job and that is what we are doing.
