Citizenship Act  If he wanted to do so, he could eliminate dual citizenship, because dual citizens in some cases have military service obligations, as is the case with Greece, and they may have tax obligations. Therefore, there are rights and responsibilities as Canadians, but some Canadians have additional rights and responsibilities, and that has to be debated.

International Trade committee  The EU came to this rather late, but I think it is evident that the experience the EU went through with Greece in particular reinforced the need to have protections when it comes to public debt. The key will be that whatever actions are taken will not be discriminatory against EU investors. If we treat all investors the same, then we should be on pretty safe ground.

Business of the House  With respect to his specific question, he has suggested that high spending is what is being recommended as a solution to the world's economic problems. We have seen where that led in places like Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Ireland. Now we hear that there are other countries in Europe that are facing significant headwinds, Norway being one of them. We were very clear for over 10 years.

Business of Supply  As I only have two minutes remaining, I will close by saying that the current Minister of Finance's approach has failed around the world. Consider Greece, which failed to stimulate the economy by spending. Today it is bankrupt. We do not want structural deficits, but that is where the government is headed. This year's deficit will exceed the estimated $10 billion, and a deficit will be posted next year and the year after that.

Resumption of debate on Address in Reply  As we saw in the 1990s, even a nation like Canada eventually runs out of credit. At that point we see a nation such as Greece or a nation that dramatically has to cut back its government services that our Canadians desperately need. We understand how this will play out because we have seen it before. This is not real change.

Resumption of Debate on Address in Reply  Sudbury was built on the backs of waves of immigrants from Italy, Finland, Poland, Ukraine, and Greece, and today a strong South Asian population. It is a rich arts and culture hub of Northern Ontario, reflecting Canadian diversity. Sudbury is located in boreal forest in the heart of the Canadian Shield and is rich in natural resources.

Finance  However, it is the NDP members who would kill jobs and take Canada down the path of Greece with their high-debt, high-tax plan.

Environment committee  They are professional buyers who understand the quality and value of fur, and travel around to the four to five world auctions that exist. These buyers are from England, Canada, United States, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Russia, Turkey, Denmark, Japan, Korea, and there are a significant number today from China and Hong Kong, with China and Hong Kong buying approximately 70% of the furs and then using them either domestically or for export as garments.

Economic Action Plan 2015 Act, No. 1  Today with this budget, we are pulled into port. It is important for Canadians to know that many other countries, such as Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, have ended up on the rocks. Canadians today can enjoy peace of mind knowing that their government is focused on their prosperity and our country's economic growth and stability.

Finance committee  You didn't make that comment in reference to France or Greece that perhaps relaxing some labour laws would assist in the economic growth?

Employment  Speaker, the Minister of Finance said no such thing. As I said, he was talking about the situation in European countries like Greece and France. Let me tell members what we are doing in Canada. While we are letting middle-class Canadians choose how they want to spend and save their money, the Liberals and the NDP want to raise payroll taxes.

Employment  Speaker, the Prime Minister should know that the Reuters' reporter himself confirmed that the finance minister's comments were not related to Greece. We learned this morning that the Canadian economy shrank during the first quarter of this year. The Minister of Finance is in Europe, and he is saying that we need to cut jobs in order to grow the economy.

Employment  The Minister of Finance thinks the answer to our shrinking economy is to weaken labour protections and make it easier to fire workers. The Prime Minister claimed that he was just talking about Greece, but the minister's office said, no, that he was talking about France. However, mixed-up Conservative excuses are not fooling anyone. When will Conservatives stop using attacks on workers and their rights as a smokescreen for their economic mismanagement?

Employment  Speaker, the Minister of Finance said no such thing. He was talking about the situation in European countries like Greece and France where their liberal policies have resulted in out-of-control deficits and out-of-control spending. As a result, there have been tax hikes, massive layoffs and cuts in services, the same thing the Liberal government did in the 1990s because of its own financial mismanagement.
