Finance  It has been bolstered by our affordability plan this spring and bolstered again by the work we have been doing recently. The other side has a plan, and it is typical Conservative austerity. They would cut employment insurance benefits, the Canadian pension plan, child care benefits and climate action cheques. They want to cut, and we want to support. That is our job.

The Economy  Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives keep proposing austerity as a solution, but the reality is that the targeted investments for families, seniors and workers are precisely what has created growth over the past few years and reduced poverty across the country.

The Economy  Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives are always preaching austerity and budget cuts to employment insurance and pensions for seniors. We will continue to be there not only to support Canadians with measures such as doubling the GST credit, help for dental care for children or help for low-income renters, measures the Conservatives oppose, but we are also there to create an economy that works for everyone, with investments in a future that is greener and more prosperous for all workers.

Finance  Every one of their measures would take money out of Canadians' pockets. It is irresponsible, it is unprecedented, it is typical Conservative austerity. That is their plan. Our plan is to invest in Canadians.

International Trade committee  I don't have to worry about the balance. Where the answer comes is in the balance. We talk about austerity. We're going into this fall economic statement and we're all saying, boy, the finance minister better cut a whole bunch of programming. Then we say that maybe we can match proportionally the American trillion-dollar investment.

Seniors  Speaker, they are forgetting half of them. Abandoning seniors is not an act of discipline, it is austerity. We are talking about people who worked for decades and then end up going to a food bank for the first time in their lives. It is not true that the rising cost of living affects 74-year-olds and 75-year-olds differently.

Business of Supply  Furthermore, the Liberal-Conservative Deputy Prime Minister recently announced that the next few months would be difficult, with austerity measures, but not for the monarchy. There is a double standard there. The population will be asked by the government to tighten their belts. Who will pay for that? I am not telling colleagues anything they do not already know when I say that it is the federal government, and by extension, us, that will pick up most of the tab.

Taxation  Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives are proving once again how much they love austerity. It is fine to criticize, but they do not have the guts to say what they would do. Where would the Conservatives make cuts? Would they cut supports to children who need a bit of help or cut child care?

Business of Supply  As expert Alain Deneault notes, everyone else has to make up this shortfall, either by paying higher taxes or by enduring austerity policies. Considering their impact on government finances and operations, tax havens are a major political issue. The public wants them to disappear, but those profiting from them want them to stay.

Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 1  Of course, inflation is really high at the moment, which is taking a serious toll. However, high inflation is often followed by a depression and austerity. In that respect, temporary measures have temporary effects, but they can have long-term repercussions. I would like my colleague to tell us whether the temporary measures are sufficient.

Finance committee  It did indeed try to reduce its budget deficit on the backs of Canadians, which was obviously a very bad thing. We were completely opposed to that. Austerity was a pretext. The government said it had to balance the federal budget, which is by no means necessary. As we have seen recently, the issue is not accounting. The federal government is responsible for balancing the Canadian economy, not on the basis of some financial figures, but rather in accordance with the needs of all Canadians and Quebeckers, and it failed to do so.

The Economy  She knows that it is only adding gas to the inflationary fire. The Prime Minister has said that anything that has a hint of fiscal restraint is austerity. He axed Bill Morneau for wanting to get post-COVID spending under control. Is she worried that if she presents anything to the Prime Minister that remotely resembles a cut, she might suffer the same fate as her predecessor, who went from Finance Minister Morneau to finance minister no more?

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  My team adopts an all-hazards approach to identifying measures to anticipate, mitigate and respond to risks in remote communities and austere environments. Our focus is on how we can improve whole-of-government and intergovernmental responses and work towards more holistic whole-of-society approaches to build resilience and enhance emergency management.

Business of Supply  These programs proved to be absolutely essential for Canadians and the Canadian economy to survive the pandemic. It is thanks to our support and that fact that we avoided austerity measures during the pandemic that the Canadian government was in the position to withstand the omicron wave, supply chain disruptions and many other situations. The Canadian economy is recovering strongly right now.

Extension of Sitting Hours and Conduct of Extended Proceedings  By delivering significant fiscal support to the economy and avoiding the harmful Conservative austerity policies that followed 2008, our Liberal government has supported a rapid and resilient recovery. We know that there are challenges ahead and the future remains uncertain, but we also know that we need to reinforce the importance of passing this legislation so that we can focus our attention on the future.
