Canada Post  However, the government's polling in the strategic policy review it announced in budget 2022 raises a lot of questions about whether the government plans to actually pursue an austerity agenda. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has also championed initiatives that would actually help build inclusive and sustainable communities, such as postal banking and community hubs.

The Budget  In budget 2022, we are continuing to protect the safety of Canadians, as COVID still presents challenges, while at the same time focusing on the post-COVID recovery and continuing to implement the platform that we promised Canadians in the last election. This is a prudent budget in the wake of pandemic spending, but not an austerity budget. We have learned from past experiences that continuing to invest in critical social and physical infrastructure during times of economic uncertainty is wise. With that in mind, I want to add to the current debate on the budget by discussing two major areas of focus.

Taxation  Speaker, every year at the same time, we hear the same old thing from the Conservatives, who support austerity. They say we should cut services and investments for Canadians. Fortunately for Canadians, we do not listen to the the Conservative politicians, who want to cut spending for Canadians.

The Economy  We will continue to be there to make responsible investments in families and growth, to be there for Canadians, in contrast to the Conservatives' proposed austerity.

Business of Supply  The whole point of this discussion is to see that we do have a role and responsibility as the nation of Canada not only to stand up and protect our neighbours, but also to look after those who are facing challenges and economic austerity.

Finance  That is why we continue to support Canadians through investments in housing and support for seniors and workers. The Conservatives want to return to austerity, which will hurt Canadians. We, on the other hand, will continue to invest responsibly and prudently, while continuing to be there for Canadians, because that is what Canadians need.

Canadian Heritage committee  So we're talking about sculptures, paintings or permanent installations. These works could liven up otherwise austere premises, like courthouses, and bring culture alive for all visitors. The art would thus introduce a bit of colour into those sites and would become accessible to the general public.

Business of Supply  We really need to get to a point where we are focused on this fiscal framework and getting things aligned. It does not have to come from austerity and it does not have to come from cuts. I will speak about that in a couple of minutes. We know that the government's spending is certainly out of control. Two-thirds of Canadians say that inflation and an affordability crisis are their top economic concerns.

Opposition Motion—Federal Budget  While the hon. member listed many groups marginalized by the economic violence of capitalism and spoke at length about the impacts of inflation, she never mentioned a word about the impacts of austerity, stagnated workers' wages and cuts to their benefits. Will the hon. member acknowledge that the government has a role to play in helping our most vulnerable people, and that doing so requires revenue and increased labour rights and protections for workers?

The Economy  The reason we put so many programs in place was to ensure that Canadians could keep putting food on the table. It is because of our support and our avoidance of austerity policies during the pandemic that Canada is seeing a rapid and resilient recovery right now, with growth of 6.7% in the last quarter. Our recovery plan is targeted towards growth and job creation initiatives that will help boost supply and increase space for the economy to grow without the risk of higher inflation in the future.

Gender-Based Violence  We must face gender-based violence head-on, but these amazing women's organizations on the front line cannot do it alone. They need the government to reject austerity measures, move beyond planning and finally deliver action and the dollars they need to save lives.

Business of Supply  Thankfully, by delivering significant fiscal policy support to Canadians during the pandemic and avoiding harmful austerity policies, we have seen a rapid and resilient recovery so far. The vast majority of the government's recovery plan is targeted toward growth-enhancing and job-creating initiatives, initiatives such as the investment to support child care and the adoption of new technologies that will help boost supply, increasing space for the economy to grow without the risk of higher inflation.

Human Resources committee  First, health care is a public service. I have a real issue with austerity measures, budget cuts and so on. Before the health crisis, the system had been struggling for years. When the crisis hit, the system couldn't respond properly. What was done? People turned to the private sector and then said that this approach worked.

Human Resources committee  There are two priorities: health care and education. Health care has faced budget cuts over the years. Every time austerity measures are applied to the health care system, they weaken the system. It has been weakened year after year. It's time to turn things around. In order to keep staff in hospitals, service facilities and home care, it's necessary to provide working conditions that will make them want to stay in the system.
