Canadian Heritage committee  When it comes to anti-Semitism in this case, when it comes anti-Palestinian hate, when it comes to Islamophobia, anti-Asian hate and anti-Black racism, we should be able to just say that this is not partisan. Right? Every government, historically, of every stripe has sought to make strides in this regard, regardless of their political party.

Canadian Heritage committee  I don't want this to be a political game for any community in this country. We have serious issues related to hate, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and anti-Black racism. These are all issues that we should rightly be working together to fight. In the case of this conversation about anti-Semitism, Mr. Chair, my sincere request is that we actually do the right thing here—and I have a track record that I am proud to stand on in working with the Jewish community in my riding and others.

Canadian Heritage committee  In politics, it can get pretty rough sometimes, and the divides are strong. When it comes to racism, when it comes to Islamophobia and when it comes to anti-Semitism, we need to hang up our political colours—our stripes—and we need to look for ways to work together. When we put motions on the table that are designed to create wedges, it actually starts to impact people in our communities—

Canadian Heritage committee  I have dedicated my political career to looking for ways to balance the playing field for all people. I would strongly agree to do a study on anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and anti-Black racism. I would love to do a study that focused on how it's impacting young people. I would like to look for ways to collaborate with the Conservatives to really flesh out some of this ugliness we're seeing in this country, and we should not use these motions in a way that creates divides.

Canadian Heritage committee  I believe B.C. is only the second province. I was responsible for putting that term, along with anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, and many different elements like anti-indigenous hate, into a piece of legislation that exists today, that compels the current Ontario government to build an anti-racism strategy to collect disaggregated race-based data and to work towards collecting hate-based data.

Justice committee  I have no other motivations. I would very much like to move on to the study of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. It is out of order and a breach of privilege for Mr. Moore to imply that we have motives other than those we have stated in this committee.

The Budget  If the Conservatives cared about fighting hate and if they cared about the rise in anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and anti-Asian hate in this country, they would not be voting against the almost quarter-billion dollars of provisions we have in this budget to fight hate. In this country, we need to stand up for each other.

Justice committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. I appreciate Mr. Garrison's amendment. Of course, Islamophobia is also a very important form of hate, but they are two very distinct and separate forms of hate, so I want to make sure that it is clear that the meetings that we're going to have on one versus the other and the report that we're going to do are going to be clear that we're doing something on anti-Semitism and something on Islamophobia and that they're not two tropes that are together.

Justice committee  It's really only adding the parallel study of Islamophobia to the study of anti-Semitism. With that, I move my amendment, Madam Chair.

Justice committee  That pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and in view of the alarming escalation of antisemitism and Islamophobia in Canada, the committee undertake a study on the issue of antisemitism and a study on the issue of Islamophobia, and the additional measures that could be taken to address the valid fears that are being expressed by Canada's Jewish and Muslim communities.

Justice committee  I'm talking about the fact that we're going to have two meetings on anti-Semitism and two completely separate meetings on Islamophobia. We'll prepare a report on anti-Semitism and a separate report on Islamophobia, and then table them in the House for a response.

Justice committee  Maloney suggested, which has been presented to this committee: Conduct, effectively, two studies—one on Islamophobia and one on anti-Semitism. However, I also want to articulate my strong support for the original motion Mr. Housefather brought forward. Thank you.

Justice committee  Yes, Madam Chair. I recognize that Islamophobia is certainly continuing to be an issue in the country, but I would like to just point out that there was a significant study on it after M-103. The Senate also completed a study. The Canadian government did a summit with many recommendations.

Justice committee  At the end of line two, if I start after the comma, “the committee undertake a study on the issue of antisemitism and”, and we introduce the subamendment here, “a study on the issue of Islamophobia”. Then we continue the text. The second amendment is on line five. It says, “that the independent studies include but not be limited”. That's the second part of the subamendment. The rest of the second paragraph reads as is.
