The Environment  We will continue to make progress domestically in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We have taken action in Canada to reduce coal-fired electricity greenhouse gas emissions. I also want to thank the member for her support in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas--

The Environment  Mr. Speaker, again, we took action on this file two years ago. In the first 21 years Canada's coal regulations are expected to result in a cumulative reduction in emissions equivalent to removing 2.6 million personal vehicles from the roads each year. We are also the first major coal user to ban the construction of traditional coal-fired electricity generation units.

Environment committee  We recognize the serious problems of climate change and are addressing them through our sector-by-sector approach, which advances both our environmental and economic objectives. We introduced the strict regulations that made Canada the first major coal user to ban construction of traditional coal-fired electricity generation plants. We also put in place greenhouse gas regulations for coal-fired electricity that are expected to remove 6,600 kilograms of mercury from the atmosphere between 2015 and 2035.

The Environment  We have taken action on some of Canada's largest sources of emissions, such as the transportation sector and the coal-fired electricity sector. Thanks to these actions, carbon emissions will go down close to 130 megatonnes from what they would have been under the Liberals. and we have done this without introducing the job killing carbon tax that the NDP wants.

The Environment  Speaker, our government is taking action on climate change. We have introduced new emission regulations for vehicles. We were the first major coal user to ban the construction of traditional coal-fired power plants. Thanks to our actions, carbon emissions will go down by close to 130 megatonnes from what they would have been under the Liberals.

The Environment  Speaker, many people forget that Canada represents less than 2% of global emissions, while the United States produces almost 20%, and that coal-fired electricity energy generation in the United States produces twice the greenhouse gas emissions as all the emissions produced in Canada. We are pleased that the United States is following in Canada's footsteps.

Thanks to our action, carbon emissions will go down close to 130 megatonnes from what they would have been under the Liberals, and we are accomplishing this without the Liberal's and NDP's carbon tax, which would raise the cost of everything.

The Environment  Speaker, we welcome the move from the United States, and I say it is about time. In Canada, 10% of electricity generation comes from coal; in the United States, it is 37%. More than 60% of electricity generation is renewable in Canada. In the United States, it is just 12%. The statistics speak for themselves.

The coal-fired energy generations in the United States produce twice the greenhouse gas emissions than all of the emissions produced in Canada. We also have one of the cleanest electricity systems in the world, with 77% of our electricity supply—

Environment committee  So our sector-by-sector approach to dealing with our footprint, to dealing with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is working. As an example, we are the first country to introduce the coal-fired regulations and to ban that. Internationally, we were the first of its kind. It is also important to recognize that provinces are a partner in any efforts that we do. Thank you.
