Health committee  Would you characterize that as sort of the height of privilege, in terms of watching vaccine inequity around the world, with the Canadian federal government being content to let doses of Pfizer vaccine go in the garbage?

Health  The mayor is now preparing to close the Windsor Detroit Tunnel to allow his residents to walk to the border line and receive a vaccine from an American vaccinator standing on the U.S. side of the border. Will the Liberals finally help border communities or are they content to allow Pfizer vaccines to be thrown in the garbage?

Health committee  Okay. Do you know what the estimated number of people is who have been vaccinated abroad?

Health committee  I'll start with a question for Dr. Lucas regarding the announcement that the Johnson & Johnson vaccines the government had been holding were going to be destroyed. Have they been destroyed?

Health committee  Mr. Matthews, while I have you here, on the contracts for vaccines that were delivered to the health committee on Friday, did your department provide those to the law clerk in redacted or unredacted format?

Health committee  Do you have any comments on what potentially went wrong between CanSino and the federal government on that vaccine contract?

Health committee  The other thing the committee is looking at right now, in the context of both PMPRB reform and access to vaccines, is the concept of the government's role and what the government has done in terms of supporting research and pharmaceutical research, particularly in the private sector in Canada, and then what the trade-off should be.

Health committee  I think we have to talk about intellectual property rights in a broader context here. In that context, I know that therapeutics for infectious diseases and vaccine development are normally on the low end of the priority list for pharma development. What are the incentives, and what are the reasons for that? Is it our IP protection model or what?

Health committee  Vaccines are going into the garbage today in Detroit. They want to send them to Canada, because they're about to be wasted, but.... This is a great segue to my next line of questions. Dr. Stewart, you implied there were enough vaccines in Canada right now, that there were 20 million vaccines, and that there were plenty of pathways to get a vaccine for Canadians.

Health committee  I just don't accept the assertion that we have enough vaccines in Canada right now. We're essentially on a nationwide lockdown, waiting, and some people are being told they will have to wait four months between vaccinations. NACI has approved a four-month dosing, so I find it problematic that the head of PHAC thinks that we have adequate supply in Canada right now and that we shouldn't be pursuing every option for Canadians to get vaccinated.

Health  Speaker, today the Prime Minister announced the indefinite continuation of the unsafe and unscientific hotel quarantine program. Even for fully vaccinated Canadians, no firm date was announced as to when they would be able to forgo staying at federal facilities where sexual assaults, worker abuses and COVID-19 outbreaks have occurred.

Health committee  It is well deserved. I am wondering if the government has given you any advice on accepting surplus vaccines from the U.S., such as what the mayor of Windsor is requesting.

Health committee  If the Americans unilaterally open the border, as Elise Stefanik has sort of alluded to today, do you think PHAC or anybody would have the resources to follow up with the tens of thousands of Canadians who would almost certainly cross the border to get vaccinated?

Health committee  Do you think any member of this committee should be comfortable with 35,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine being thrown in the garbage?
