Health committee  Madam Chair, as I mentioned briefly in my opening remarks, we have launched a number of activities in response to the recommendations in the report. We've talked a little bit about the reviews we have under way with regard to establishing baselines and understanding the resources we are currently devoting to our regulatory function.

Health committee  Madam Chair, the circumstances surrounding the non-insured health benefits program...and this particular contract to administer it came into operation in 1998. I mentioned some of the challenges earlier, in terms of the transition to the new contractor and subcontractor, and the priority that managers in the program accorded to ensuring that this group of Canadians continued to receive essential health benefits and services.

Health committee  Madam Chair, in terms of the baselines, we recognize that one of our challenges was a lack, in some areas of the department, of baseline information, and we've accepted the Auditor General's recommendation in that area. We have work already under way to establish those baselines.

Health committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. I am pleased to be here today to speak to Health Canada's part of the Auditor General's report from last November. We thank the Auditor General for her report. We are pleased that she has recognized the progress we have already made in the areas we're here to talk about today: the regulatory programs and first nations health benefits.

Health committee  No, I'll just reinforce that. We are looking into other solutions to provide the information at a justifiable cost to respond to the committee’s needs. We will inform the committee regarding those solutions.

Health committee  Yes, with pleasure. The investment that is being made is an annual investment of $24.5 million in health human resources for first nations. It is $10.5 million to support internationally related health human resources issues and $20 million a year for us to address in-Canada issues relating to health human resources.
