Industry committee  That is why we need fourth-generation technologies, and LTE gives us an opportunity to meet those needs in future.

Industry committee  Because they were interested in other assets. We needed rights to two of those assets, and the way it was split up and the way the bidding process was set up, we couldn't go for both those assets at the same time.

Industry committee  No, we believed it was too late.

Industry committee  First of all, much of this again is covered in our brief in detail. What I think is important and what we're suggesting again is that it is very important to us to make sure that we do due diligence on what has happened here and make sure that we understand all the implications and future implications of this transaction as it has been consummated or announced.

Industry committee  It was on international standards. Certicom technology was going to become the future international standard. Elliptic curve technology was the future.

Industry committee  The scrutiny would have been intense.

Industry committee  That is correct.

Industry committee  That's a very good point. I've always believed that what blesses one can bless everyone. It's very important we understand that we're all in this together as Canadians. It's very important we understand the value of investing in cutting-edge technology and innovation in this country.

Industry committee  If we had, I think everyone would have been happy to enter into it. We need to have this discussion to make sure all of us understand what the opportunities are, what the assets really are, what's going to happen to those assets, and what losing those assets or control of those assets is going to mean to our industry and our country.

Industry committee  I sincerely believe that if the government gets involved and brings these parties together, and these parties work in good faith negotiations, the outcome will at least be thorough. Regardless of what happens, we will all leave that meeting or those meetings better informed and better understanding the implications.

Industry committee  This was largely a U.S. procedure, largely handled in the U.S. I think what's critically important here is that the bid itself did not present a barrier to us. What presented a barrier to us was that to become eligible to make a formal bid required us to sign an NDA that had a clause in it that we call a standstill clause.

Industry committee  I think we did consider that. I'm not sure. I have to be very careful in matters of that type because I want to make sure we don't prejudice ourselves for any future dealings at that point, but we did consider it.

Industry committee  No, I'm just saying that we did consider it at the time. Again, I have to be careful. We haven't finished evaluating all our options to date. Much of this has happened very quickly, and that's one of the reasons we're here. We just want to make sure we don't rush into anything that we're going to regret in the future.

Industry committee  I can't see how wiping out the value of their intellectual property assets with the first transaction could benefit anyone.
