Industry committee  I'd just indicate that this is the wrong party to ask that question to. The proper place to ask that question is in the House of Commons.

Industry committee  I tend to put things in practical terms, even though I have a major in mathematics and can talk with these people a bit. The practical issue with a survey is that you don't know where the returns are going to come from; you don't know how representative they are. Put it this way: Charlottetown, within P.E.I., may not be identified with enough returns to be able to say Charlottetown vis-à-vis P.E.I.

Industry committee  I appreciate your comments, because that was the purpose of me coming here, to indicate that the census is being used by citizens because they gave the information and they wanted it back to use for their purposes. I think those are the kinds of community things that we don't necessarily hear from the intelligentsia, even though I might want to engage them in discussion on the values of the census versus a voluntary survey.

Industry committee  Thank you very much, Mr. Chairman and members of the committee. First, let me explain that I am associated with the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg in relation to the coordination of Winnipeg member organizations in a national community social data strategy. This is a consortium currently of some 16 municipalities and municipal-level organizations, sponsored by the Canadian Council on Social Development.
