Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  Okay. So would the jobs that are being offered there be looked on to be good for those people, forgetting about maybe having to work an extra couple of hours?

Gary Schellenberger

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  I know here in Canada we also have labour laws that are made for how many hours you should work and all this. My employees were my biggest asset in my business that I ran for 40 years, and my dad did for a few years before that. We were in the decorating business. I had many employees over those years.

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  Thank you. Thank you, Ms. Spring, for being here today. We all know that the rule of law, or the lack thereof, seems to add to poverty. You say we should not support the police who are somewhat corrupt. Are you suggesting there could possibly be an uprising before the election in November?

Gary Schellenberger

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  I mean those people you're talking about who are not happy with the government and feel the police are corrupt. Are those people going to go through a democratic election, or will they try to do something else before?

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  Yes, and it was a wonderful time. To see these young people going out then.... And I guess they have a lineup of people at the door who want to get in and do some of this. So I applaud you for that. I know that the rule of law is very important in getting people out of poverty.

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  Okay, that's long enough for me to ask the question. Do you feel that the Canada-Honduras free trade agreement is a positive move that may help to advance the rule of law in Honduras?

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  And is part of the reason you have pick-up and delivery services for your people from and to safe places is because of the high unemployment? These people are employed and they might be attacked, maybe by some people who don't have jobs.

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  Thank you, and thank you for coming today to update us. When you are the last person to ask questions, a lot of the questions you wanted to ask have already been answered. Mr. Iliopoulos, your employees have health care, an on-site medical centre. Does this include their families or is it just for your employees?

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  Are your tradespeople who work on your infrastructure from the local community or are they also employees of your company?

April 18th, 2013Committee meeting

Gary Schellenberger

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  Do these people then maybe leave your company somewhere along the line, to go out on their own?

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  I do know a little bit about the OAS—a couple of years ago, I was in Washington. We have a theatre in my riding called the Stratford Shakespeare Theatre that started a theatre project in El Salvador quite a number of years ago. They developed a theatre company that took kids off the street who were destined for trouble and gangs, and brought them in not only to be actors but also to be carpenters, electricians, set people, to sew and learn a trade.

Gary Schellenberger

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  Thank you for that. I've only been on this committee about three or four months. We've looked into poverty and human rights abuses in various countries and it seems that respect for law and order, and good law and order, runs parallel to poverty. Is it your sense that there needs to be a strengthening of law and order in Honduras?
