Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee I would like to add to my friend's response to your question about the challenge and the issue we're talking about on health care. I think the problem that we have is the health care system is based on the Indian health policy, which came out in 1979. That's close to 40 years now, and the various policies that flow from that are not based on the needs of our communities.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee In terms of immediate needs or immediate steps we could take now, when we look at communities like Attawapiskat or Pikangikum, our immediate priority is always to ensure that they have the supports that they need at that moment, whether it's mental health supports, counselling, therapists, or child psychologists to go there and hopefully stabilize the situation on the ground.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee Meegwetch. I, too, want to acknowledge we are gathered here today in the traditional territory of the Algonquin Nation, so I thank them for allowing us to have this gathering in their territory today. I also acknowledge my friends and colleagues who are with me. I also acknowledge all of you, members of the committee, and also the staff members and support people who are sitting around the room.
