Environment committee  There is a large sense of place there. You can feel the story that happened there, though this may be hard to tell, if you're not used to, what I would call, evocative cultural landscapes.

Environment committee  It's on our radar.

Environment committee  I think you're bang on regarding the opportunities that are offered to us and will come in the future. Up to this point, I believe that we were struggling, to a certain degree, with the operation and management of all of our places across Canada. As we're moving on and we're more strategic in our choices, we will be looking at what you called economic opportunities and will be better at doing that.

Environment committee  The answer is yes, there will be a desire by people wanting to access the tax credit to be on the register, and therefore there will be a need for us also to be capable of managing the number of people that could ask to be registered.

Environment committee  The register is not about the condition of buildings. It's really about why they're designated. What is captured is the heritage character of a place, why it was designated.

Environment committee  No, not on the register.

Environment committee  The only program we have is the cost-sharing program for national historic sites, heritage railway stations, and heritage lighthouses right now. We ask that they be registered on the Canadian register, but there's no need for that because we have a directory of national designation as well.

Environment committee  The answer is not that direct. Sorry. I would like to have a clearer answer here. The Canadian register is made up of everything that is designated at the local, municipal, provincial, territorial, and national levels. But to be eligible to the program that Parks Canada is running, you need to be designated by the federal government.

Environment committee  It's hard to answer this one. We're not claiming that we're...or wanting to sound good at managing all these heritage places, but we are having some success with some of the work we're undertaking with national historic sites and heritage railway stations. For every one that may not be a success, we can have a success elsewhere.

Environment committee  The reason is that most of the listings that are missing on the register right now are from the provinces and territories. Some stopped uploading information to the Canadian register, because in a way there was no need for them to do that.

Environment committee  There was no incentive. Some went to a provincial registry on their own, and now, to have the two systems speak together, there's difficultly from an IT perspective. We're not saying it's impossible, but it would require work for sure, and some goodwill.

Environment committee  I believe that this is work.... If that's the way that the program should be built, I think we would have to go and find out if there are barriers for rural properties in terms of being treated the same way, and then ensure that this is not the case. There are ways to do that. I would say yes.

Environment committee  The process is the one of the national historic site designation. Maybe Norman will need to add to my comment here, but basically, a site could be a landscape. It could be an indigenous landscape. There is no restriction. It could be an archeological site as well. The notion of a national historic site is broader than just the building.
