Status of Women committee Thank you. I'm in Calgary; thank you for letting me be part of this. The financial well-being of women is a long-time concern of mine. Government and private pensions are tied to paid labour, and these formulas are inappropriate for unpaid work. I want to thank the gentleman who spoke ahead of me, who defined the problem very well.

Human Resources committee My comment is to clarify about love. You cannot standardize love. You cannot guarantee love. That's what I meant. I also think that we should not reduce our arguments again to emotionalism. You hurt my feelings.

Human Resources committee Okay. I'll try that. How were you raised? You seem to have turned out okay.

Human Resources committee Well, you were using a legal word. You're talking about what I consider to be good forms, is that correct?
May 3rd, 2007Committee meeting
Beverley Smith
Human Resources committee By legitimate, does that mean legal?

Human Resources committee The criterion should be that the child feels loved and secure and that the caregiver is the same caregiver for a number of years so the child is anchored in emotional support. I suspect everybody at that table has very little concept of what it's like to lack that support.

Human Resources committee The problem is that your child care does not offer love.

Human Resources committee Many people are saying that some women can't afford to stay home and so they need day care. Ms. Chow likes that argument. I would like to welcome you to look at one past that: why can't they afford to stay home? We have created a tax system that has made it so they can't afford to.

Human Resources committee I find the tone of the debate is becoming very emotional and confrontational, and I don't think it's useful. I feel that because I'm on video conference I'm actually being forgotten, which is another issue. I don't even know who's speaking because they haven't been identified.

Human Resources committee It's Beverley Smith. When you have a minute, I'd like to talk.

Human Resources committee I have one more thing.

Human Resources committee Under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, parents have a right to raise their children in the language of their preference. The language of francophone children is dying because maybe they aren't spending enough time in their home environment, where the francophone language is used.
