Justice committee  Sure. We would most definitely not say that legalization would do that. A legalized industry we can, in a very loose way, just for comprehension, compare it to the way marijuana was legalized in Canada, where the government actually controls the where, how and when it can happen, which is most definitely not a decriminalized system.

Justice committee  Yes.

Justice committee  Our feminism isn't necessarily limited only to people who identify as women or.... When we talk about feminism, at least as a sex worker rights movement, we're talking about substantive equality, which goes beyond and across genders.

Justice committee  I can't speak specifically to the TIP report that has come out of New Zealand most recently and how it's being connected with trafficking, but I can say that since decriminalization was implemented in New Zealand in 2003, sex workers have a lot more freedom to report violence in the workplace and to have some kind of recourse when they experience violence.

Justice committee  Thank you. Our alliance is made up of 25 sex worker rights groups across the country, led predominantly by sex workers living the impacts of PCEPA and who serve thousands of sex workers through front-line services and advocacy. I'll use my time today to dispel some of the myths, misinformation and unfounded statements that the committee has heard over the past three weeks.

The problem with the conversation and in this committee as well is the conflation of youth and adults, so I don't know that it makes sense. I think Sandra put it extremely well just now. Rather than pretending that you're having the same conversation moving forward, I think you need to start from the beginning and really unmix all of the conversations you're having at the same time.

Information & Ethics committee  New regulations aren't necessary, no. We don't think that any special regulations around the sex industry should be.... However, I would also like to say, in fairness, that you might have started with the mandate around privacy, and that's one that we were really interested in, but the first person that you invited to this committee—I was told by the clerk—to frame the discussion was somebody from Rape Relief who told you that sex work is exploitation.

Information & Ethics committee  I was speaking specifically about the way that the laws around underage sexual activity—

Information & Ethics committee  But I just want to specify that I am no expert in the laws around Internet technology. I was speaking specifically about the way we view youth sexuality. It's problematic. I also mentioned that as well.

Information & Ethics committee  As far as we understand, laws exist already to prevent that. There are existing laws around privacy. There are existing laws around people who are under 18, whether or not that actually stands in line with our recommendations at the alliance. Existing laws can just be applied. Additional repressive measures are not what we recommend.

If you don't mind, I will start by saying that Mr. Viersen's intervention was the exact reason that we don't want to come to committees like this, but at the same time why we are compelled to.
