Agriculture committee  Thank you very much, Mr. Chair. Thank you to all the witnesses here. I too am very impressed with the amount of knowledge and research that's being done in the department. Dr. Saindon, I was very encouraged to hear you say that all our programs are based on scientific research in collaboration with the farmers, which is really what we all want.

Agriculture committee  Just to be sure I understand, the issue is that we've been taking grasslands and grazing lands and they've become croplands now.

Agriculture committee  Are there still ways to increase...? I agree. Our agricultural sector, I have to say, has contributed a lot to carbon sequestration and helped with climate change. There's a lot more that can be done, and I think that's what we're exploring. How are they rewarded for what they've done, and what's the balance going forward?

Agriculture committee  That's great. Thank you very much. I agree. I think the data management is very important for understanding what the problem is and what progress we're making. One other—

Agriculture committee  Thank you very much, Mr. Chair. Thank you to both of our witnesses. It's really encouraging to hear the work that's being done in academia on these very important issues. Dr. Bedard-Haughn, I think you're amazing an academician. I love the fact that you're a farm kid from Saskatchewan.

Agriculture committee  To follow up on that, do you feel like the value of these wetlands is adequately enumerated when people are looking at them? I know with things like flood mitigation that wetlands have a [Technical difficulty—Editor] kinds of studies are being done that the full value of the wetlands is being taken into account.

Agriculture committee  Great. Thank you. Mr. MacLeod, I was just wondering about the decrease in the rangeland and especially in the tamed, forage lands that we've seen. I can only imagine it's continuing to go in the same direction. I wonder whether you feel there is a way to more greatly monetize the beneficial impacts of those lands on our environment in order to retain more of them.

Agriculture committee  Thank you very much, Mr. Chair. Thank you to all three witnesses. I found it very interesting with a lot of hope about the future by using our agricultural lands to sequester carbon and to help us with the environmental challenges we're facing. I want to start with Ducks Unlimited.

Agriculture committee  Yes, I understand that. However, having said that, do you think it would be possible to get to net zero if you were retaining those carbon reductions within the agricultural sector? Could you see getting that 8% down to zero?

Agriculture committee  Okay. Thank you. My other question is for the Agriculture Carbon Alliance. There are two parts to it. One is about the price on pollution—the carbon charge—and the rebate that's being given right now. You mentioned that having this rebate at the end of the year, and the time lag, were reducing investments being made by the agricultural sector.

Agriculture committee  I have one more question to do with the grain drying and the use of propane and other fuels. I read about the electrification of the system in Manitoba and perhaps using heat pumps, as well, to help with this. Is that at all feasible, and has anything been done on that?

Agriculture committee  Thank you so much. Thank you to all the witnesses. This has been incredibly informative. It obviously points out the need for a lot more research in this area. My first question was to do with the statement made by Mr. Bernier—and perhaps Mr. Caron, since you haven't spoken to address this—that the greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector are necessary and are likely not to be reduced.
