Foreign Affairs committee  I am concerned about foreign interference, as we should all be as parliamentarians, because we're here to uphold democracy. As you know, the rapid response mechanism was the outcome of the G7. I was at StratCom, the Strategic Communications organization, recently in Latvia to understand hybrid threats.

Foreign Affairs committee  Which ones are high on your list in terms of what you're thinking about? There are all sorts of opportunities: economic development, democracy development, security, business-to-business partnerships.

Foreign Affairs committee  Is Canada prepared to call for greater involvement of other nations in election monitoring to ensure, as best we can, the greatest possible fairness in the election that should take place in Bolivia? It's made a big difference to what's going on there now. If we were going to support democracy, should we not be encouraging a broader look at that election and encourage the direct involvement of Canadians in election monitoring there?

Foreign Affairs committee  However, we're not in the Ukraine because we have 1.3 million Ukrainians in Canada. We're there because they're fighting for the values and principles of democracy, stability, security. They had Crimea, which was illegally annexed. They're fighting in eastern Ukraine. We have Operation Unifier there. I spent time with the commander and the troops there.

Foreign Affairs committee  I have been adamant in saying, as I said in my opening statement, that Canada's enforcement of an international treaty should never allow a foreign state to take measures of reprisal against foreigners, and I've stressed to my like-minded colleagues that we should all be concerned, because Michael's case shows why the world's democracies need to work together.

Foreign Affairs committee  However, it is never too late to fight for women's rights, human rights, the environment or democracy. Some will even criticize the Security Council, saying it is obsolete or even ineffective. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most important forums in the world where major decisions on peace and security are taken.

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  It seems that a lot of this political change has happened with very little western engagement. What can we do to be more supportive of the forces of change and democracy there?

Procedure and House Affairs committee  I want to thank you and your entire team across the country. Elections Canada is the guardian of democracy, and it's very important that you continue to maintain public confidence in what you're doing. We're all grateful for the work you do. I want to give you the opportunity to talk about what happened in the last election.

Canada Elections Act  This disenfranchisement is unjustified and must change. I call on all Parliamentarians to make young people equal participants in our democracy by supporting this vital legislation. (Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed)

Information & Ethics committee  Thank you for being here. Your role is vital to our democracy. My former colleague Pat Martin used to say that access to information was the oxygen and lifeblood of the democratic process. With every government that comes in, including this latest one, its first promise is open government.

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  There is another leader, who also ran for president, who is going to be in Ottawa around April 23 and would like to appear and testify about the situation in the Congo and democracy there. If it's worthwhile, it would be very helpful. I can testify also that I knew him very well when I lived in the Congo. He was a member of my steering committee. It's an area of the world where every form of human rights abuses are happening, so it might be interesting.

Justice committee  We think it's important for the courts to have this flexibility that is essential to their work and to the protection of democracy. That said, among the amendment recommendations made by Mr. MacDonald and Ms. Kent, they suggest a change to subsection 2(3) of the bill amending the Judges Act. That subsection would add a subsection after subsection 60(2) of the Judges Act.

Justice committee  In the distinction you make, you invite us to place this trust in the judiciary rather than in the legislature. Is that correct? If so, what about democracy, the right of citizens to elect the legislator, to elect their representatives to Parliament, so that the public can influence the issues that concern our society? Is there not a democratic problem with the choice you are asking us to make?

Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement Implementation Act  That means that in 60% of cases, the power of money partially or totally prevailed over the states' political will and the power of democracy. Naturally, this quantitative assessment does not factor in the constant pressure on public decision-makers, who need to censor their own comments to avoid getting dragged into court.

Government Appointments  We know it is a matter of public record that the Liberals vet their appointments through their database, through their partisan database, their fundraising database, their volunteer database. That is not in the best interests of democracy. It is not in the best interests of an independent and unbiased judiciary. That is what we are talking about. What we are looking for from the Liberals is non-partisan appointments.
