Health  Mr. Speaker, if the government really wants to defend public health care, it should stop American-style health care from entering our country. The facts are clear. Thousands of people are paying thousands of dollars to have operations. This is clearly against the law. Their former health minister said so herself.

Telecommunications  Mr. Speaker, Statistics Canada reports that nearly half of Canadians, 44%, are reporting that they are struggling with paying their rents and groceries. On top of that, Canadians pay some of the highest cellphone and Internet fees in the world. The Rogers-Shaw merger will only make things worse.

Telecommunications  Mr. Speaker, if I just heard the minister correctly, does that mean he will oppose the merger today? We know the Rogers-Shaw merger will drive cellphone service prices up. Canadians already pay some of the highest fees in the world. This merger will make things worse and raise prices.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, yesterday, Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem admitted that the government's approach to dealing with the inflation, rate hike after rate hike, has only made things worse for Canadians. Household debt and the cost of housing are through the roof. Now what we are dealing with is a Prime Minister who promised to make it more affordable for people to find homes to call their own but has done the opposite.

Seniors  Mr. Speaker, during the pandemic, we heard horrific reports from long-term care homes, stories of seniors crying out for food and water and seniors being left in soiled diapers and linens. The Prime Minister promised to change that and did the opposite. Families say things have not gotten better.

Health  Mr. Speaker, yesterday in the Prime Minister's meeting with the premiers, he had a chance to tell premiers not to double down on for-profit care and poach from our hospitals. However, Premier Doug Ford confirms that this never came up in any conversation. The Prime Minister had a chance to stand up for public health care and increasing staffing levels.

Health  Mr. Speaker, during the last election, the Prime Minister spoke out against the for-profit privatization of our health care system. He said that would not be innovation, and I agree. However, it has been confirmed that, yesterday, he did not raise this issue in his meeting with the premiers.

Government Priorities  Mr. Speaker, instead of spending $100 million to help Canadians, the Prime Minister spent $100 million to give contracts to his friends at McKinsey. This is millions of dollars given to a firm that advised American hospitals how to maximize profits by billing sick patients. This is the firm that advised Purdue Pharma how to sell more opioids.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, everyone in this country should be able to find a home that meets their family's needs and that is in their budget. Sadly, that is not the case. People are struggling to find a home they can afford, and rent under the Prime Minister, since he has taken office, has gone up by 60%.

Health  Mr. Speaker, when one or one's loved one falls sick, or one's mom needs a surgery, one needs nurses in the hospital to provide that care. When the Prime Minister was elected, the shortage of nurses was 5,800, and the shortage of nurses is now 29,000 positions. The situation has gotten a lot worse, not better.

Health  Mr. Speaker, when the Prime Minister took office, there was a shortage of 5,800 nurses. Things are now five times worse. He promised to hire more nurses, but he broke his promise. He thinks the provincial premiers' move to privatize our health care system is innovative. Why is the Prime Minister making the crisis worse instead of improving our health care system?

Seniors  Mr. Speaker, two years ago, the Canadian Armed Forces had to be called into long-term care homes. What they saw in those homes were horrific conditions: seniors left for hours in soiled diapers and linens; seniors crying out for food and water, left dehydrated and hungry. After seeing the report, the Prime Minister said he was sad and frustrated, but two years later there has been no action.

Health  Mr. Speaker, our seniors need sufficient funding and legislation, and the government has done neither. In 2021, the Liberals declared that a “two-tier system would worsen access and health outcomes for all of us” and that innovation in health care comes from “improving and expanding our public health care system”.
