Agriculture committee Thank you. Mr. Atamanenko, you have five minutes, please.

Agriculture committee Thanks very much for appearing, gentlemen. I've been following this whole file for a little while. My party also supports having the Auditor General investigate this apparent misuse of funds, and hopefully that will happen and we'll get some answers. Right here we're trying to see the best deal for farmers at a minimum cost to the taxpayer, if we can do this efficiently.

Grain Transportation Mr. Speaker, a classified document has shown us once again that agricultural producers have paid much too much since 1992. Can the Prime Minister tell us exactly when the government will reimburse farmers the $730 million they have already paid, and can he tell us if he is prepared to ask the Auditor General to launch an inquiry into this matter?

Grain Transportation Mr. Speaker, once again, the farmers get a bad deal from our federal government. In 2004 alone, farmers paid $4,329 per car, per year, for railway hopper car maintenance while the cost to the railways was only $1,686. Will the Prime Minister ask our Auditor General to investigate why the railways have been overpaid by farmers for hopper car maintenance since 1992 to the tune of over $730 million?

Agriculture committee Okay. Maybe that's the crux of our problem here. Thank you very much.

Agriculture committee We have to switch chapters. Is that right?

Agriculture committee Thank you for doing my job, Mr. Anderson. Mr. Atamanenko.

Agriculture committee I have just a very quick question, and forgive me if I don't understand this. That's why I'm asking the question. As it stands now, if it's over 85% it's classed not as a dairy product but as a protein, and that's where the crux of the problem is. What if this were classed as a dairy product?
May 11th, 2006Committee meeting
Agriculture committee To follow up on this, if that decision wasn't made, then we wouldn't be having the problem. Is that right?
May 11th, 2006Committee meeting
Agriculture committee Thank you, Mr. Jarvis. Now we go to Mr. Atamanenko for the final segment of this first hour.

Agriculture committee I don't have a lot of questions. The ultimate goal is how to ensure our producers keep making money. That's the key within the system--to determine how we can ensure that your industry is able to survive and make some profit. I guess that's the overall goal. Here is my first question: do you feel the government has a role here to do something, whether it's to limit the MPIs coming in or to somehow redirect our industry?

Agriculture committee His wife is about to have a baby on Saturday, ladies and gentlemen, so we have one meeting with Jean-François, and then we'll be switching clerks. We wish you and your wife all the best. I hope everything works out well. Mr. Atamanenko.
