Status of Women committee  Unfortunately, certain communities have become oppressive enclaves in which racism—specifically Islamophobia, anti-Black or anti-Asian racism—further marginalizes survivors. Furthermore, many immigrant and racialized survivors remain vulnerable and unprotected because they are afraid to call the police in an emergency for fear of revictimization, and, for non-status women, they are afraid of putting themselves at risk of deportation.

Citizenship and Immigration committee  Yes, we should be using the word “racism”. We can define what kind of racism it is. Anti-Black racism, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism are very common forms of racism directed at particular groups. My colleague, Nadiya Ali, also directly works with IRCC and other federal agencies to look at these issues, so I'll refer to her on some other strategies.

Citizenship and Immigration committee  Ali, are there any particular countries or areas from which, in your experience, applicants for immigration to Canada are most likely to be impacted by Islamophobia?

Afghanistan committee  Thank you. Ms. Rezayee, what are your thoughts on what I was asking, about possible racism and Islamophobia?

Afghanistan committee  I would like to get your opinion on this. Are we dealing with some racism issues in Canada? Is there Islamophobia? I know there are differences between people coming from Ukraine versus Afghanistan. Do you think that some of that is at play with what's going on here? I'll start with Ms. Frogh.

Afghanistan committee  I think the contrast between how Ukrainians and Afghans have been treated has been very painful and difficult to explain, except with reference to racism and Islamophobia.

Social Media Companies  Madam Speaker, we are seeing a disturbing rise in hate in all of its toxic forms in Canada, an alarming increase in racism, misogyny, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia and transphobia. “Stop Hate For Profit” is an ongoing campaign to hold social media companies accountable for hate on their platforms. Social media must prioritize people over profit and they must do it now.

Diversity and Inclusion  Speaker, on January 28, the Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion announced the government's intention to appoint a special representative on combatting Islamophobia. Last week, on March 19, Canadians saw yet another attack, this time at a mosque in the GTA. We remember Quebec City. We remember London. Racism is alive and well in Canada, and more must be done to combat it.

Public Safety committee  The United States has not done that. You continue to fundraise for them. You continue to fundraise for groups that promote Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, Nazi sympathizers and white supremacists. I just wonder how you can justify giving people like that a platform to raise funds.

Public Safety committee  Are there anti-hate provisions in your terms of service? The groups that we're talking about are hate groups. Groups that promote Islamophobia, groups like the Proud Boys, groups like the Ku Klux Klan have no place in our society. I'm sorry, all this mumbo-jumbo about legal.... Do you not have anti-hate provisions in your terms of service?

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  This is one area that everyone needs to be focused on. As discussed earlier, much of the rhetoric, the hatred, racism, Islamophobia is actually quietly promoted by the government officials. It's not a state policy, but very subtle. We've seen this in China and India. We're seeing it elsewhere. One significant problem that we all have to think about and deal with is that in the last 10 years, the international community has experienced at least three known genocides, starting with the Yazidis, the Rohingyas and then the Muslim Uighurs in China.

Questions on the Order Paper  While the panel is designed to focus on anti-indigenous and anti-Black racism, LGBTQ2+ prejudice, gender bias and white supremacy, the panel is not restricted from exploring all forms of racism. The exploration of white supremacy allows the panel to address anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, as Jewish and Muslim people are common targets of white supremacy and white supremacists. For example, as part of its engagements with internal and external defence stakeholders, panel members have explored the concept of anti-hate, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia within National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces.

National Day of Remembrance and Action Against Islamophobia  Seven months ago, another act of hate took the lives of the Afzaal family in London, Ontario. On Saturday, the first National Day of Remembrance and Action Against Islamophobia, we recognize that prejudice is the link between these attacks and more. When everyday Islamophobia is normalized, it builds and eventually spills over into violence. Our government continues to take action in combatting discrimination, including by bringing governments and communities together for a national summit on Islamophobia and committing to the important work ahead.

Emergencies Act  We know the convoy organizers are the same people who have tried to organize other protests about random issues. In 2016, we had Motion No. 103 against Islamophobia. They tried to rally folks and spark a grassroots protest against the motion. I am talking about Tamara Lich, Benjamin Dichter, James Bauder and Patrick King. Those very same people tried to get Canadians up in arms so they could spread their white supremacist way of thinking.

Emergencies Act  As a racialized woman, a very visible Muslim because of my choice to wear the hijab, my experience has been different. I cannot ignore the ties to white supremacy, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism within this movement. One of those arrested in Coutts for possession of a weapon and other charges has a history of Islamophobic social media posts and memes, pushing the conspiracy theory that the Prime Minister is working with “Islamists” to take over Canada through immigration.
