Income Tax Act  Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to rise in the House today on behalf of my constituents of Kingston and the Islands and perhaps on behalf of all Canadians. I rise on behalf of all Canadians because of the national impact that this private member's bill would have. I want to commend the member for Cambridge for his excellent work on this legislation and the leadership he has demonstrated on this issue.

National Maternity Assistance Program Strategy Act  Madam Speaker, I thank all my colleagues who spoke to my private member's bill, Bill C-243, both today and in the first hour of debate that took place a number of months ago. I also want to give great thanks to Melody, the welder in my community who inspired the bill and her now 16-month-old son, Ezra.

Queen's University  Mr. Speaker, this year in my riding of Kingston and the Islands, Queen's University celebrated its 175th anniversary. This important milestone demonstrates Queen's University's initiative and excellence in the field of education. This past weekend, Queen's celebrated homecoming.

Social Development  Mr. Speaker, parental leave and maternity leave are essential for Canadian families, but our government can do more to adapt to the new realities facing families. Can the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development tell the House what he is doing to move forward on this important issue?

Standing Orders and Procedure  Mr. Speaker, I appreciate my colleague's contribution, in particular about question period. She has a good point. I think this goes back a number of decades to the true benefit of question period. I think it started to change when we began to see the whips' offices giving lists of who would be asking the questions.

Standing Orders and Procedure  Mr. Speaker, I was one of those people who was not able to get on the list today to speak, and that is what I am interested in exploring a little and hearing my colleagues' comments on. It was not until only about two decades ago, to my understanding, that the whips of the individual parties started to provide lists of when MPs would speak.

Paris Agreement  Mr. Speaker, in particular, I take note of how the member concluded his comments and his speech, speaking about future generations. We have heard a lot in this House over the last few days about the various different stakeholders and people who will be affected by this. One particular group that I find we are continually neglecting in this discussion is the future generation.

Paris Agreement  Madam Speaker, I appreciate my colleague's willingness to want to help the Liberal Party. That is very endearing of him. However, as I stated throughout my speech, all three governments, in particular, the U.S. and Canada, have committed to having discussions with our indigenous communities.

Paris Agreement  Madam Speaker, I would love to hear your personal opinion on this. We will save that for another day. I appreciate my colleague's question and opportunity to address this topic again. Yes, some industries are inelastic. They do not change. We are forced to pay what the price demands.

Paris Agreement  Madam Speaker, it is a pleasure to rise today in the House to speak to this important subject. The Paris agreement is without a doubt a watershed moment in the global community's fight against climate change, and it is an honour to be contributing to this historic debate today.

Paris Agreement  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for the nostalgic trip down the memory lane of my university days, talking about the elasticity and demand for certain products in the market. However, I think she neglects to realize that it is the tax, the government intervention, which will specifically change the elasticity of the demand of fossil fuels in this particular case.

Paris Agreement  Mr. Speaker, I want to congratulate my colleague on recognizing the fact that climate change is real, for starters, and a problem. I hope I can say the same for the rest of his colleague, but I am not sure if I can. I listened to his description of the math and the taxes and how they add up, but I think he is missing the fact that the whole reason we want to tie this to the economics is so that it drives incentive within the companies to decrease their emissions, to decrease their contributions to carbon.

National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians Act  Madam Speaker, I appreciate the question, because I have been hearing it all week, and I have looked forward to the opportunity to respond to it. The truth of the matter is that the opposition is painting this as though it is a one-of-a-kind event that the Prime Minister would make this appointment.

National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians Act  Madam Speaker, to suggest that the Liberal Party of the day had no problem with Bill C-51 I think is a great misrepresentation of the facts. In fact, the Liberal Party had a number of concerns and put forward a number of recommendations to change it. The difference between the Liberal Party and the New Democrats is that we value both safeguards for Canadians and their right to freedom of expression and the other rights granted to them.

National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians Act  Madam Speaker, this bill would give us the ability to have more oversight, to see what the particular agencies are doing and how they are acting, to have this classified information, and to have parliamentarians at the helm of understanding and appreciating what is going on. This is in keeping with our five allies and what they have been doing, in some cases for many decades.
