Canada Labour Code  Mr. Speaker, I thank the member, who is indeed an alumnus of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate along with me. I understand the Prime Minister was part of that society at one time as well, but he dropped out after the society could no longer afford his speaking fees.

Canada Labour Code  Mr. Speaker, there is a convention in place of respecting the Speaker's neutrality, and the implication by the member that the Speaker would have a bias on this particular issue is totally inappropriate. I think it should be withdrawn.

Canada Labour Code  Mr. Speaker, I understand that some accommodations were made with the other side to allow me to speak at this time, and I very much appreciate that. I rise today to speak about Bill C-4, which would make very substantial changes to our labour relations environment. For the purposes of my speech today, I will focus on one specific element of the the bill, the secret ballot.

Points of Order  Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order concerning the report of the Special Joint Committee on Physician-Assisted Dying tabled earlier today. Page 3 of the report lists me as a member of the committee representing the House of Commons. I was not appointed as a member of the committee.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Mr. Speaker, the best deradicalization program we could have would be to get rid of ISIS. That would prevent a lot of radicalization, because many people respond to the promise of a supposed and imagined caliphate. I want to ask if the member believes that genocide is happening in Syria and Iraq.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Madam Speaker, I want to ask the member about the immediate versus the long term. We have heard proposals from the NDP and the Liberals about things we could do that would hopefully pay dividends over the long term. Certainly training and humanitarian assistance is important, but what we have right now, quite imminently, is serious violence against innocent people.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Madam Speaker, I thought the member spoke very well. She certainly spoke about some things that we all agree are important: humanitarian assistance and addressing terrorist financing, although, of course, we might disagree on some of the details. However, what we are talking about here is the question of the military mission.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Madam Speaker, I have been asking government members throughout this debate if they would be willing to use the word “genocide” to describe the violence against religious minorities committed by Daesh. It is a simple question. Of course, we agree that it is terrible what is happening, but is the government willing to identify that what is happening, what is being done by Daesh, is genocide?

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Madam Speaker, the hon. member has highlighted, with which we all agree, that it is a complex region. There is really a lot of complexity in terms of different interests and factions. I wonder what he thinks about the idea of collective security, in particular. Canada has been attacked by Daesh; our ally, France, has been attacked in a significant way by Daesh.

Foreign Affairs  Mr. Speaker, Amnesty International released a report today that highlights the disastrous human rights situation facing Muslim Tatars in Russian-occupied Crimea. Enforced disappearances, the abduction, killing, and torturing of activists, and cultural vandalism leave many wondering if the 1944 mass deportation will be repeated.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Madam Speaker, I have been asking government members if they are willing to use the word “genocide” to describe the actions of the Daesh in Syria and Iraq. This is the word that has been used by Hillary Clinton. It is the word that has been used by the European Parliament in a resolution that it passed.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Sure, Mr. Speaker. I guess that is a pretty fundamental question. Why does bombing work in some cases? Not to be overly pedantic, it is because it destroys the enemy, because if we have ISIS fighters trying to kill innocent people and if we can stop those ISIS fighters, if we can take out their supply lines, if we can undermine their ability to operate, that obviously provides a strategic advantage to our allies, who are then more able to effectively challenge ISIS, who are more able to fight them and, thus, weaken them.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Mr. Speaker, all members of this House should be proud of Canada's tradition as a fighting nation, in some cases; as a peacekeeping nations, in some cases; and as a nation that always emphasizes humanitarian assistance. We should be proud of our record as a nation that does all of these things, but yes, we should not ignore the military component in our history.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Mr. Speaker, I am pretty incredulous at this approach, for two reasons. First, obviously members of the coalition are not going to publicly criticize the Canadian government. To suggest that were even a possibility, that American administration officials would come out and say they do not like what the Canadian government is doing on an issue like this, just shows such a strange understanding of international politics.

Canada's Contribution to the Effort to Combat ISIL  Mr. Speaker, I have the pleasure of sharing my time with the member for Prince George—Peace River—Northern Rockies, whose good comments I am very much looking forward to hearing. I have been listening to this very important debate over the last couple days and think I can maybe offer three distinct points about it and what it says about the mission in general.
