Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, we have to stop pretending that Canada is a country without Islamophobia. We have serious structural problems in Quebec City, Toronto and London. Islamophobia is deadly. We have needed action for a long time to confront it head-on. In 2019, a delegation from Windsor's Muslim community appeared at the justice committee on Islamophobia with strategies to combat it.

Attack in London, Ontario  I am not saying that it is solely those politicians who have used Islamophobia for political gain who are to blame, absolutely not, but they are surely a part of the problem. If they have used Islamophobia for political gain, thinking they can divide people to get votes, this is the result of it.

Status of Women committee  Sometimes you don't know the multiple identities of an individual. That's why this cannot be a straightforward strategy to end or deal with Islamophobia. It has to take into consideration the diversity of Muslims, and then within the diverse communities of Muslims, the specific intersectionalities of Muslim women. That could be anything.

Status of Women committee  One thing I would like to mention is that the term “Islamophobia” actually doesn't really help or aid the topic. I know it's not a term that anyone here has created, and it's something that has been accepted by pretty well everybody, but the term “phobia” means to be afraid of something, and then it's to be afraid of Islam and to be afraid of Muslims.

Status of Women committee  For all of us, It has not been easy. Clearly, these incidents show that Islamophobia exists here in Canada. Acts of hate exist. What can the federal government do to better support Muslim communities and the communities that have been targeted by these acts of hate?

Status of Women committee  Thank you so much, MP Mathyssen, for supporting that motion for a summit on Islamophobia. It is certainly welcome. As MP Wong mentioned, hate cuts across many communities, and we also stand in solidarity with our Asian Canadians, Black Canadians, indigenous Canadians and Jewish Canadians.

Business of Supply  Along with the anti-racism secretariat, this work will help the defence team eliminate all forms of racism, prejudice, bias, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and white supremacy from within our organization. Where the previous government did little to improve things for those who wear the uniform, and removed the training, the sharp training that was there, we have taken action.

Public Safety committee  The motion called on the federal government to convene an emergency national action summit on Islamophobia that should take place before the end of July 2021. Mr. Farooq, I know that is something your organization has been asking for for a while now. Could you talk about the possible outcome of such a summit and the role the federal government should play in addressing Islamophobia?

Attack in London, Ontario  To Canadian Muslims across our country: “Your sense of belonging and security is paramount. We stand with you in fighting to ensure Islamophobia is eliminated.” In that spirit, I call and join with other MPs for a national summit on Islamophobia and ask that this be convened at the earliest opportunity. All of us have a role to play in ensuring such heinous acts of hate and terrorism never happen again.

Diversity and Inclusion  Islamophobia has no place in Canada. Every Canadian, regardless of race and creed, deserves to live in peace and security, and my heart goes out to the victims, loved ones and the entire Muslim community.

Status of Women committee  Madam Minister, you talked before about Islamophobia, and I'd like to get to that now. As you know, last week I presented a unanimous consent motion in the House asking for a national action summit on Islamophobia. I was pleased that it passed.

Government Policies  Speaker, our hearts go out to the loved ones of the Afzaal family and to Fayez who remains in hospital. Our government knows we need to act against Islamophobia. We are doing this through Canada's anti-racism strategy, adding white supremacist groups to Canada's terror listing, increased funding to protect places of worship and community spaces.

Islamophobia  No Muslim should be afraid to dress how they choose, to fear that visibly manifesting their religion makes them a target for lethal violence, yet this is the legacy of the London attack. We need to call out anti-Muslim sentiment by name: Islamophobia. We need to call out politically motivated violence for what it is: terrorism. We need to work to address the root cause of this hatred: radicalization online. That is the work I am committed to, and I urge all my colleagues in the chamber to join me.

Public Safety committee  They all spoke about working together and putting partisanship aside to deal with the issue of Islamophobia and hate. I'm trusting that we can do that today. On May 5 we passed a motion to study ideologically motivated violent extremism. We've completed two meetings thus far. I have a motion, which I would ask for unanimous consent to deal with today, that would see us continue our study next week, on Monday, and add an extra day on Wednesday.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, as a government, we have taken unprecedented steps to fight the rise of Islamophobia. We have a responsibility to combat and condemn hatred in its strongest forms, which is why we declared January 29 as a national day of remembrance of the Quebec City mosque attack and action against Islamophobia.
