Income Tax Act  Mr. Speaker, as was said earlier, we are here today to debate a private member's bill, Bill C-240, that really focuses on exempting real estate and private corporation shares from capital gains tax when the proceeds are donated to charities. I have worked in charities for a good part of my life.

Standing Orders and Procedure of the House and Its Committees  Madam Speaker, as I said earlier, it is important to have these discussions, and probably more frequently. I know the member and I agree on something very clearly, and that is the idea that we need more proportional representation and that it would be good to be in this place knowing that every vote in this country matters and was reflected in the seats around the table and in the House.

Standing Orders and Procedure of the House and Its Committees  Madam Speaker, I think it is incredibly important to always have these opportunities to talk about the Standing Orders, because they are the rules on how we guide ourselves in this place and how we are transparent in the process to Canadians. In my riding, I have definitely heard from a lot of Canadians who are feeling a lot of cynicism about our democratic process.

Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, I thank the member both for being my travel companion and also for his intervention in the House. I could not agree more. I was on a trip not too long with the veterans minister across parts of France, the Netherlands and Belgium. I stood in many graveyards that had children buried there, 16 year olds to 25 year olds.

Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, I agree that we need to continue to do the work in the Arctic. That is incredibly important. I also want to say that I represent 19 Wing Comox. I know how hard those folks are working every day in my area to protect not only our region but the whole country. I also know that they are facing the reality of trying to repair planes when they cannot necessarily do so in a very safe way.

Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, it was such an amazing event with so much information that it is hard to pick one thing after the many reports that we heard. When we hear from all the different countries, to me it is very important to make sure that people understand that the countries have different thoughts and opinions on working out issues.

Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, I thank the member for his question and of course really appreciated our time together. In terms of the NATO parliamentary association, this is an opportunity for members from all parties. We may have internal disagreements, but in this place we represent Canada, and it is important for us to work together.

Committees of the House  Madam Speaker, I want to recognize the amazing work of the member for Edmonton Strathcona this evening. I really appreciate her thoughts on this issue and certainly hope that all people in this House listen to what she has to say. I want to start this speech today by talking a bit about the fact that while growing up, I lived part of the time at my grandfather's house.

Preserving Provincial Representation in the House of Commons Act  Madam Speaker, I have enjoyed my time working with the member on different committees and in different roles. That is something all of us as members of Parliament should spend time talking about, how we work collectively across different party lines on things that matter to our constituents.

Preserving Provincial Representation in the House of Commons Act  Madam Speaker, I agree that there are multiple challenges. There are seven ferries in my riding and a lot of areas to cover. It is a great honour for me to do that work. It does mean that I spend a lot of time on the phone or travelling to speak with constituents. I represent 11 municipalities, over 20 indigenous communities and four regional districts within all of that.

Preserving Provincial Representation in the House of Commons Act  Madam Speaker, that is an important question. My response is it does break down those opportunities for connection with leadership. People want promises to be followed through on. It was most disheartening for me because of the amount of work that the committee did. It was a significant report.

Preserving Provincial Representation in the House of Commons Act  Madam Speaker, I appreciate the member's passion on this issue. I really appreciate the correlation that she made to how we diminish people by the language we use and how that was used against women. It was also used against indigenous people and people of colour. We need to stop this.

Preserving Provincial Representation in the House of Commons Act  Madam Speaker, I am deeply humbled and grateful to be here to speak about something fundamental to our country, and that is democracy. The reason I am feeling that so deeply today is because my riding of North Island—Powell River is in deep grief. On May 14, just two days ago, Canada lost an amazing community hero and World War II vet: “Stocky” Edwards, at the ripe age of 100.

The Economy  Mr. Speaker, gas prices are reaching record highs across the country, and costs are only expected to increase in the summer. Canadians are frustrated. After years of the pandemic, many had plans to travel across Canada to visit loved ones, but the high cost of gas is ending that dream.
