Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, my community is facing these two interconnected public health emergencies: COVID-19 and the toxic drug supply. Too many people have lost their lives or lost loved ones to drug poisoning, and it is fundamentally because the government refuses to stop treating this as a criminal issue and follow the evidence to treat this as a health issue.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, this year, the Parliamentary Budget Officer reported on how the federal government has spent less than half of the funding earmarked for its two main housing programs. He also talked about the limited impact of the Liberals' national housing strategy. More and more people in my community of Victoria are struggling to pay rent.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, my NDP colleagues and I support the ban on foreign homebuyers and remain committed to not introducing a capital gains tax on the sale of primary residences. This motion is crafted in a way that would allow governments to give up federal land to rich developers essentially for luxury condos.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, in my riding, we have an incredible organization, the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness. It does incredible work in our community, but it needs permanent, stable core funding. Indigenous advocates and the NDP have been calling on the government to develop and fund a for indigenous, by indigenous housing strategy.

The Environment  Madam Speaker, when confronted with the failure of the emissions reduction fund to reduce emissions, the Minister of Natural Resources said that the program did not qualify as the kind of fossil fuel subsidy that the government has promised to eliminate by the end of 2023, despite 27 of the first 40 projects funded by the program claiming that they would be increasing production.

It is real, and this is just the beginning. Canadians are already feeling the impacts. They want to see concrete action to address this emergency with the urgency required.

COVID-19 Vaccines  Madam Speaker, COVID-19 has been devastating. Getting people vaccinated continues to be our best line of defence against this deadly virus. However, while wealthy countries have enough doses, most lower-income countries cannot protect their frontline workers, their elderly or their most vulnerable.

Resumption of Debate on Address in Reply  Madam Speaker, I want to thank the hon. member for her advocacy for child care and prison reform. I share those passions. However, in her speech, the member used the words “as a climate leader” when referring to Canada and to the government. While the government continues to talk about how its plan gets an A, its record gets an F.

Resumption of Debate on Address in Reply  Madam Speaker, I heard the member speak about the need for support for small businesses. One of the groups of small businesses that has been left out of the throne speech, but also left out of pandemic supports for the past two years, are start ups. These people poured their life savings into their businesses, only to open during a global pandemic.

Resumption of Debate on Address in Reply  Madam Speaker, Canadians expect their Prime Minister to take climate action that matches the scale and urgency of the crisis, but instead the Liberal government has been increasing fossil fuel subsidies to big oil and gas companies, the very companies that are fuelling the climate crisis.

The Environment  Mr. Speaker, extreme weather is hitting both the east and west coasts. The environment commissioner just released a scathing report on Canada's climate inaction. It said, “We cannot continue to go from failure to failure; we need actions and results, not just more [targets] and plans.”

Order Respecting the Business of the House and its Committees  Mr. Speaker, my colleague mentioned running in an election and knowing what we were signing up for. I ran in 2019 knowing that there is a lot of sexism in Parliament. Within a few months of being elected, one of the Conservative members asked me if I had ever considered sex work.

There are 338 of us, and we are coming from different contexts and different communities with different case numbers. It is so vital right now that we take this step.
